Does Qantas offer extra baggage allowance for students? I was browsing some posts and someone briefly mentioned this. My wife is a foreign student and says she can get 30kg from SIA when she flies home. We recently flew to Singapore with QF and both Qantas and my agent looked at me strangely when I asked if she could take an extra 10kg. In the end it didn't matter because I checked in with my Silver QFF and they let us on with 31kg each, but it would be good to get some clarification for future.

I'm pretty new round here so if this is a bit off topic then I'm sorry!

There is an unwritten rule that is the case. It happened to me and I still hear it's happening but because it is unwritten, it depends on the stinginess of the airline.

QF would normally allow you in for 30kg but not automatic. Like Mal said, it often stems from a student promotion but with SIA and Garuda Indonesia, you should face any problem.

So yes, such priviledge does exist for students...

SIA let me on with 60kg once, Frankfurt to Melbourne via Singapore. It was a student ticket, and I was first at the desk when it opened! "It's a bit heavy.." the lady said in her not-so-good English accent.

Ahh the good old days.
