As part of the increased scrutiny at certain airports, security agents may ask travelers to turn on their electronic devices at checkpoints and if they do not have power, the devices will not be allowed on planes, the TSA said.

Now that will cause chaos. Plenty of people traveling, their devices will run out of power some of the time.

Powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft. The traveller may also undergo additional screening.

What of those devices which may be checked in as luggage?

Not allowed in checked baggage either from what I understand. But I am seeing conflicting stories on the topic...

That's getting worse for travellers...

If you can't power up your device or carry broken devices then you will not be allowed to fly.

Rules apply to those transiting and flying BA to US.

There is no mention whether passengers would be allowed to fly if they throw away broken devices.

Just 2 weeks ago we flew BA.On board I got out my kindle and the battery was flat.A lot more to think about before flying now.

If you can't power up your device

I'm not sure I understand exactly how powering on a device solves the potential problem anyway. I have had plenty of devices with secondary battery backs (eg a sleeve). Presumably one battery can power the device and the second holds the explosive. So demonstrating the device in use doesn't solve the problem there.

And what about the spare batteries that have to go in hand luggage because they are forbidden as hold luggage? And the external power sources of various sizes to recharge a mobile phone on the run? I usually have one of them in my backpack.

Much of this is all about appearances, many of the so called security measures are for show ( do we seriously think people will use the same methods which people are looking for to commit terrorist attacks).
