Extra extra long weekend in Cairns

Day 3
This was a far more leasurely morning. After getting up we walked over to one of the near by car rental places and hired a car. Once we had done that we went and got breakfast at a nearby café (called Kani’s).

After breakfast (and by now it was 11:30 am) we set off on our surprisingly long day of driving.\
We started with Millaa Millaa falls, which was in our opinion a little too cold to go swimming in (esp as Baby Harvyk had made it clear that she’d only go swimming in very warm bath temps, and even then it was marginal), that said it was certainly nice place to cool the feet down in.

After that we continued onto Atherton for a very quick lunch stop. After lunch we continued into Mareeba, where unfortuantly the Coffee works was just finishing up for the day, however Golden Drop mango winery was still open.

We tried a few different wines, and decided we both liked the mango cello, and the sweet mango wine, so we brought a bottle of each, (actually the bottle of mango wine was for Mum who was looking after the other three this weekend.)

We then continued onto Kuranda, however as we’d turned up at 4:15pm, everything had just shut, which was a bit of a shame. So we continued, our plan was to go onto Port Douglas and find a take-a-way (talking a place which also sells hamburgers and battered savs here, not a resturant which lets you take the food away) and get fish’n’chips and eat them by the beach.

Unfortuantly we could not find a single take-a-way. There way some resturants offering to sell food takeaway, but the thought of spending $50 on fish’n’chips didn’t sit well with either of us. So we drove back to Cairns and found a take-a-way at the esplanadewhich was a far more reasonable price for some battered fish and minimum chips. So after ordering dinner we took it over to the lagoon and had dinner there before making our way back to our hotel.

After getting up I returned the car whilst Mrs Harvyk sorted out Baby Harvyk. Once that was done we went down to the take-a-way we’d found last night and ordered some brekkie (they had $8.50 bacon, eggs and toast with drink which we thought looked quite reasonable).

After breakfast we checked out of the room and asked them to mind our bags for a little while. We wandered down to the esplanade where we had one last gelato and one last dip in the lagoon. Soon afterwards we walked back to the hotel where we picked up our bags, and caught a taxi out to the airport.

After arriving at the airport I changed into more appropriate night time in the middle of September in CBR clothing (the air conditioning at the airport was good), we checked in, (26D and 26F, bulkhead row, no one in 26E), and went up to the CNS QP and got stuck into the scones.
After a G&T and a beer, it was soon time to board, and soon after we were on our way.

The CSM came over the PA and mentioned that she would be showing the movie first as our flight time was going to be a little shorter than expected.
The flight itself was good, with Baby Harvyk going down into the bassinet and sleeping until it was time to get her up for landing in SYD. Shortly after we’d left lunch was served, which was a red Thai curry, not bad, and the CSM put on the movie, which was called Brave, again not bad.
After lunch, ice creams where served, so all in all a standard longer QF dom flight Y service.

Coming into SYD was a little bit bumpy (and the inspiration for an “ask the pilot” and “ask the FA” question which I’ll post later today). On landing when we where told we could turn on our mobiles, I received an email from QF which made my day (details will be in the “travel in October thread”)

We walked up to the QP where every set of 4 seats was “taken”, although almost every one of them only had the one person sitting there. If there is one thing the lounges need, it’s more seating for the solo traveller which still leaves seats available for larger groups. Anyway, we asked a lady who was already seated if she minded if we joined her, no problems.

So after finding a place to sit, I went to see what the food and beer situation was, 5 minutes later I returned with pseudo nachos and a glass of fat yak…

Boarding time came and went, with the only real notification was boarding time of 5:10 had turned into a 5:15, only problem was the clock said 5:18. Soon enough however a boarding call came over the PA, we had barely left the lounge before another more frantic boarding call came over the PA.

Soon enough we where seated, again in a row of three to ourselves. It was quite a bumpy flight, which again made me question why they have time for beer and wine, but “there is not enough time to serve softdrinks sir”. On landing in CBR, we where the last off the plane but it also meant our luggage was waiting for us on the carousel.

With that all that was left was to pay for parking (even after 4 days, it was still less than a one way taxi fare from our place to the airport) and drive home.

Pretty much sums up the story of every australian holiday at the moment....

There's a takeaway fish and chips right on Macrossan St, good value too.
