So I was researching prices on QF to SFO.

BNE-SYD-LAX return gave me $1500-$1800 ish depending on time I chose.
But if I wanted to fly AA LAX-SFO on the same ticket prices jump up $800 !!
When I can get a a semi-flexble fare directly from AA LAX-SFO for a couple of hundred (or an instant upgrade for $350) why is Qantas trying to charge me through my A##?

It's not you, they are trying to charge unsuspecting Australian based purchasers.

Many times have found the best fare by pricing each city to city sector as against a through ticket. Especially on the short haul AA flights. Recently flew Yyz/Ord/Den/Lax/Syd/Adl (business stops at Ord & Den) at a much lower fare than what Adl/Yyz cost me. Found low cost, short haul AA flights with a much lower overall fare than either AA of QF could generate as a through fare.

The problem I have is that its work based travel.. I must use the TA they say and I cant book my own flights. Even though I'm trying to save the company money (and get a few extra SC) I end up choosing my own flights on QF website , screen grab it and send that along.

I discovered the exact same thing trying to get to the east coast of the US. The fare difference was $700 to book the exact same flight separately on AA. I called the platinum number and asked what was happening. The agent agreed that it seemed strange and tried the same booking for me. She found the same price differential. She told me that she did not know why it happened and suggested it was a fluke glitch of some sort. At this point, serfty's hypothesis is making some sense to me...

Maybe you could ask the TA to make separate bookings?

In the end it come under the budget I had been given. ( just dont like giving qf more then I need to). I work for a university so I'm limited to onsite-campus-travel agent from a 'budget-student-travel-agent' that will remain nameless- they do little more then copy what I give them and $150 fee for doing it.
