Just thought I would add some pricing if it helps (from Google Flights).

MNL to AMS on 24 Dec and back on 13 Jan for $2626

Interestingly the price for CX and SQ has dropped as well to $3405 and $3838 respectively.

Getting to MNL still proving to be a challenge for an reasonable price even in Y.
Yes, 24 Dec is peak period for Oz to Philippines.

However for many other days, Philippine Airlines has a sale on from Oz to MNL. J return fares from about A$2300. Ex SYD and MEL, 1-2-1 in J and aircraft newer than QF. See the PR website. Good travel agents such as My Travel Solution in MEL always beat the online price.

It is a pity Philippine Airlines couldn't make a success of the Perth - Manila flights they tried about 6 years ago. (Via Darwin)

IIRC that airline ceased those flights after only about 10 to 12 weeks.

Yet it kept MNL - DRW - BNE, and subsequently ceased the DRW intermediate stop. By all accounts its A321neo lie flat in J (2-2) route MNL - BNE and return is a success, and has risen to five nights a week ex MNL, and the same naturally for the return day flight from BNE.

In a great idea initiated by AFF's Clifford Reichlin and the irrepressible Mattg, AFF has stopover guides for a number of cities.

MNL is among them:

Metro Manila (if one has time on the way back to Oz) is a great shopping destination with SM Supermalls ('SM' is ShoeMart, owned by the richest gent in Philippines) often having weekend sales with prices in its huge department stores at locations such as SM Mall of Asia and SM Megamall cut by 10 to 70 per cent. Despite the fall in the A$ against the Philippine peso, prices remain good value and there's a huge range of footwear and clothing (though more limited for taller, larger gents and ladies.)

I’ve been called many things, but this is the first time I’ve been called irrepressible 😲😛

Anyway, I’m glad a few AFFers have taken advantage of these fares!

When you can get cx j flights from $5200 return Sydney , mid next year I don't understand the excitement over these fares. You still have to get to Manilla (obviously) and if you also do syd manilla leg in J it's going to cost more (from what i have found) than the straight through CX flight that only has one stop in Hong Kong.
Happy to be corrected or shown better pricing.
Thank you

They are great fares if you can use points to get to/from an Asian port. Some people also probably buy a cheap Y flight there and back to save a bit of money

Been departing the likes of HKG for years due to OneWorld J seat availability to USA & Europe, arriving in HKG on daylht flight usually in PE, fees much lower too. Also allows for a stopover. Due to unrest in Hong Kong next one is from either DPS or MNL in QSuites.

Etihad and Qatar Airways are both offering some pretty good J fares from Manila to Europe at the moment, including to Rome and Frankfurt. EY MNL-xAUH-FCO is $2,723 return in J.

You can redeem Qantas points to get to Manila on QF19/20 (or pay for a cheap flight) to position. If redeeming points to MNL, book the return flight back to Australia on a separate ticket to save on carrier charges.

On occasion, airlines like Philippine Airlines have excellent sales, including in J (business class). It's worth subscribing to its emails. Some will be irrelevant to you but others...gold. Airlines like this have more modern equipment (arefurbished A333s ex MEL/SYD to MNL, then A359 to LHR) than QF, excellent safety record, professional staff who are generally pretty good and pleasing timekeeping. 1-2-1 suites in J, 2-3-2 in W (PE).
