A new feature on the velocity rewards web site: you can now book Etihad reward flights direct from the velocity rewards site. You used to have to call the call centre for any non DJ/ VA partner bookings. With any luck you'll be able to do the same thing with other partners soon.

Oh, and being able to use your points for upgrades on the same partners would be quite nice too :)

Nice work VA!

Fantastic!! Biz to Abu Dhabi for 94k, Biz BNE-SIN for 50k points. I see a trip in my near future...

Hrm, so fiddling with this one.. there seems to be a reasonable selection of premium awards on EY available, though I think they've got a little tweaking to do yet:
  • The 'tabs' at the top of each day showing the cheapest reward available sometimes shows figures that don't match up with reality (Looking at GVA-MEL, it tells me that I can select a flight on the 18th of Jan from 143700 + $43 .. but nothing is available for me to select)
  • F reward flights (not any seat) seem to have some strange things going on with availability .. I've seen awards be available at stupid prices, disappear on a second search and then reappear at the normal price on the third search. It would seem selecting a one way award vs. a return award affects this in some way..
  • Also, I'm struggling to find F rewards coming back in to MEL..
  • Annoyingly, it would appear that if you're selecting an EY redemption at the "reward" level, you can't have VA or DJ sectors in the booking.
  • Also annoyingly, it seems I can only get a redemption involving VA29/30 if I'm looking for SYD-AUH-SYD.

Availability appears to be better than QF, on first glance, especially for European ports other than LHR .. (one of the extraordinarily irritating features of the QF Awards site is that it will show availability in Business, even if only one of the sectors is in Business with the rest is in Economy).

For more easily comparable routes (SYD-LHR), the points cost is very similar - if slightly cheaper with Velocity. Random examples for SYD-LHR in February next year (out on the 7th, back on the 14th):

Velocity Rewards

SYD-AUH-LHR in J, 125000 + $73
LHR-AUH-SYD in J, 125000 + $359
Total: 250000 + $432

SYD-AUH-LHR in F, 187500 + $73
LHR-AUH-SYD in F, 180800 + $359
Total: 368600 + $432

Qantas Frequent Flyer

SYD-BKK-LHR in J
LHR-SIN-MEL-SYD in J
Total: 256000 + ??

SYD-BKK-LHR in F
LHR-BKK-SYD in F
Total: 384000 + ??

I don't have enough points with QF, so I can't see what the taxes come to to see how they compare to VA.

BNE-SIN on Etihad is 25k + $75 in Economy. Compares favourably to:

SQ using Krisflyer 23,375 + $218.71.
QF using QFF 30k + $218.67.

Even an AAdvantage award is 25k + booking fee + taxes.

On Virgin Australia, BNE-DPS is 26,900 + $110 in Economy.

Seems to be 2+ seats available in Business, BNE-SIN on Etihad.

Great news with plenty of travel coming in to Europe.... I even have an EY F return MEL -CDG booked.... Just not sure if I get better value collecting the points fro velocity or from Etihad Guest.....

Like the very low +++'s.

One curiosity .. when select SIN from the drop down list it naturally brings up BNE & AUH (EY flights) in the drop down list, but also brings up PER & HKT as options, but of course when you select either it doesn't return any flights. An error, or plans to reroute PER-HKT flights via SIN??

Having just restarted building Velocity points with that newish Velocity Platinum Amex I can see a good opportunity developing here.
Looks like Velocity points will be a lot more value than previously.

Wait until they bring SQ and Delta into the fold!

And Air NZ plus the Velocity revamp coming soon

The NZ code share/ TT flights are in there now. They have been there off and on for a few weeks but they have appeared and disappeared at various times with teething problems. Seem reliable again now. Would be great to see the full NZ reward inventory in there though.

Oh, BTW - the whole awards booking search function doesn't work at all in Google Chrome (Mac). The whole DJ site has chrome issues - hopefully someone there will look into it.

Seems to be 2+ seats available in Business, BNE-SIN on Etihad.

First SYD-AUH and AUH-FRA seem to have 3+ seats available.

SYD-AUH-FRA in First is 156400 + $73.
SYD-AUH in First is 94100 + $73 on EY ( $313 on VA)
AUH-FRA in Business is 39600 + $21
AUH-FRA in First is 59000 + $21

Ah glad it's not just me :) Couldn't get any destinations to come up at all in Chrome. Why don't they test this stuff... I'm in a PC btw.

Hoping that when Velocity is relaunched they do another 25% transfer bonus with Amex MR :) that will make some of these rewards more attractive!

Looking forward to seeing the SQ redemptions, I'm sure SQ will be defending Krisflyer so we won't get anything too crazy but fingers crossed!

Why are the VA fines so high?

Not that I'd choose them in J over EY anyway...

Something changed.

BNE-SIN is now:
29000+$75 in Economy
57900+$75.

:(

Looks like a change in burn rates as well as a change in earn rate bonuses has gone through.

Anyone want to check the archives?
