Is there a simple way to check the fare class offered when making a domestic booking on the Qantas website? I have checked every link available on each screen right up to the passenger details page, but nothing seems to tell me what class it is that I am booking seats in. Am I missing something?

The cheapest Red-E-Deals are O, and the more expensive ones are N. Other than that, you can look in the source code for the fare value and the booking fare.

Nope. Used to be a trick (the source code trick referred to above) but now no longer - only shows the Qantas class

For Qantas FF program, the comparison shows whether the flight is classed as Economy (Fully Flex and Flexi Saver) or Discount Economy (Red e and Super Saver)

For others programs it is more difficult.
Red E-Deals are typically N or O
Somewhat perversely O is normally the cheapest and earns on AA
N is more expensive and doesn't

It used to be possible to find the fare basis by viewing the source code for the webpage where the type of fare (red e-deal, supersaver, etc.) and associated fare cost is selected on the QF site.

The code now appears to have been changed to prevent this.

I am not sure if there is any other way to find this information.

This link will at least give you the relevant fare classes for each type of fare:

Or just get your prices and flights, ring up the customer service centre and ask them, they ask you why you want to know etc and just be honest, i told them so i knew what days i may be able to move my flight to and that i want to make sure i can request an upgrade etc.

What is difficult is that a return fare say SIN-MEL-SIN books in 2 different classes, eg S and N, so one is upgradeable the other is not.

Sometimes you can use the ITA travel planner tool and you find the same price you can be 95% sure that the fare classes are as stated by the ITA travel planner thingy.

Generally you should be able to tell the class by looking at the various airfares on display.

This may not be entirely accurate but it is very close. I am not sure of the use of H class as it seems to vary between Flexi Saver and Fully Flexible but the others should be OK. I used the example of current SYD-MEL airfares and looked for availability from the QF website over the next few days.

Code:
Airfare type Airfare Class
************** ******* *****
[SIZE=2]Red-edeal           $127            O
Red-edeal $152 N
Super saver $177 S
Super saver $192 V
Super saver $222 L
Super saver $247 R
Super saver $272 M
Flexi saver $290 K
Flexi saver $342 H
Fully Flexible $412 B
Fully Flexible $412 Y
Business $453 D
Business $623 J
[/SIZE]

Another option is to look up the airfares you need from the QF website and then use a class availability tool like Amex Class Availability to find out which classes are available for the flights listed. It is not 100% foolproof but accurate most of the time.

Here's a link to the ITA fare search tool; as posted you try match the ITA listed first character of a fare code with the booking class.

ITA Software: Login

(mind you, it does not help for red e-deals)
