As many of you know we are currently in Fiji.

When I say we I mean my wife, daughter Karen, her husband Cameron, her two children and another of our grandchildren.

When staying here Karen & Cam use a nanny some of the time so they can have some sanity time of their own.

Today we went to the village where Karen's Nanny is from. We handed out lots of chocolate Easter gifts and some clothes and they loved it. (Adults and kids alike) Karen's Nanny (Nata) only had the clothes she was wearing and her work uniform and was so excited when Karen gave her a couple of bras and T shirts.

We asked if there was anything else that we might be able to help them with and the answer was bottled water as their drinking water is polluted, tinned food, bread, rice and some cleaning equipment. The amazing thing is they still have a magic attitude and look forward to getting back to 'normal'.

When the water rose they had to get to the village church and only managed to do so by pulling themselves along a rope. Nata's 75 yr old mother nearly got swept away as she was not strong enough to manage by herself. She only survived as other risked themselves to help her.

We went into one house where the water was up to the table tops and it is now cleaner than many houses I've seen in Australia. Unfortunately that is only one house and many others have been destroyed or at least all the belongings have been destroyed. As I said before their whole attitude and outlook is amazing and they were quite taken back at the things we gave them.

Admin has given me permission to run a mini Fiji appeal on AFF with those who want to do so pledging some money? Donations could be public via this thread or private via PM (up to the individual).

The only way I could see this working would be for people to pledge money. I would then buy the items and collect the money on return. it would require trust in both directions.

I envisage that this would run until and including Tuesday next week 17th April. At the end of this we would publish the total amount and the members who contributed.

I realise this is just a drop in the ocean of what is really needed but I also believe that every bit helps.

Bill.

I love Fiji and its' people.

I am happy to contribute say.... $500. I know that in terms of what I can afford that it is a bit insignificant.... however I want my contribution to reach those most affected.

Bill.. If you can find a cause that I can directly help.... I would be very happy to double my contribution to $1,000k.

What I don't want.... is to donate money to a charity which uses 30% in "admin" costs!

I want my money to help people....NOT companies!

Boss

I'm happy to contribute $100 ,I too love Fiji and it's people and hope they get the help they need.
Take care Bill.

Today I am going to have very limited Internet access so probably will not post again until this evening.

Thank you to those who have offered to help and I would like to encourage anyone who is considering doing so.

All money raised will go directly toward helping Narewa Village in Nadi. If we get too many donations we will look for another village but at this point are staying with this one village due to our personal connection to it.

Thank you everyone.

Bill - I am happy to donate to this cause. I have just sent you a PM. Agree with bossreggie that direct action is so much more cost efficient than organised charities. (But there is place for both)
Thanks for taking the initiative on this Bill.

Can we use a contact in Fiji such as either the GM at one of the Hotels over there, I am not sure how many we have as company reps but I know we have at least 1.

Otherwise I am happy to make some phone calls as I am an Apexian and we have clubs over there and I do know some of them.

I'm happy to provide in kind, the sort of goods you mentioned. Not small but commercial quantity. Let me know if this is something you would be happy to be handling. Physically, goods would be delivered direct to the village, with your involvement.

I have very poor Internet so I'll try to sort something better in the morning.

We had an interesting day working with the villagers. Lots of photos etc to come.

PMs to a few people when I can do so.

I would be very happy to double my contribution to $1,000k.

$1000k

Perhaps a quick edit Boss, in case Bill holds you to that pledge of $1 000 000! ;)

Bill, I'm happy also to offer my meagre assistance of say $100.

How do we get the cash to you?

Apologies all for not updating for a few days or responding to PMs. I believe we have our internet connection sorted out now.

On Wednesday we visited the village of Narewa and presented them with a food parcel. This comprised of flour, rice, milk, water, tinned food and cleaning supplies. Total value of $FJ2682.28 ($A1510.99). The items were mostly purchased wholesale thanks to the generosity of the supermarket manager.

Photos are (or will be shortly) available on the AFF Facebook page. We have created a page on Facebook called Help Fiji where (shortly) people will be able to donate online. Donations through this will go to Karen's (my daughter) PayPal account. We will ensure that 100% of donations go to the cause and the accounts will be available to be checked by a suitable person. (I'm just waiting for his reply)

We are currently putting things together and will purchase more needed goods on return to Nadi next Wednesday.

What we have done is minute compared to what is needed but it all helps in its own way. I encourage people who have not donated to do so and say a big thank you to those who have done so.

More to come.

I have a few PMs to answer and people to get back to. I will, hopefully, do so this evening.

As I was one of the people suggesting Bill should get himself a Facebook account, :p I will donate the amount equal to the number of friends Bill manages to have on Facebook by 9:00am, Tuesday 17 April.

Currently the total stands at 51, 51 = $51.00.

Hi all.

My daughter (jakplus1) has opened a page on Facebook that can accept donations towards this cause.

Help Fiji | Facebook

If you are unable to help financially, would you mind sharing the page to your friends and family?

Thanks

I used to live in Lautoka in the early 70's and honeymooned on one of the Islands in the 80's. Have been back several times, with and without kids.

Whilst not happy with the political situation the local villagers are genuine and very friendly. Just great people

Love to help..$100 towards the appeal.

Great work Bill
