To be the downer in the group, is there a rule about putting photos of minors on the internet without the parents permission?

Is it because its considered a 3rd world country so everyone goes, ohhhh. Arent they cute! and stick them online?

I would be P****D if photos of my kid was put into trip reports on mass by a tourist. It makes me very uncomfortable that there are multiple photos of minors online without parents permission, topless, semi clothed and for #### sake, I see a childs cough in one of the photos! (photo of 3 children standing near the water/page 29). I understand some cultures are not up tight about their bodies as others but this is the internet and these are minors and they are not OPs children.

Yes, go ahead. Roll your eyes at me, Im "that" person. If you wont allow a stranger to show up at your kids next swimming lesson, take photos and put them online, then I don't understand why its OK for other to do it.

While you certainly have a point, there is nothing in here against the posting guidelines as far as I can see. So your issue might be better directed to the Moderators to see if they have considered the posting of such photos and whether there should be something added to the current guidelines for AFF about this issue or not.

I see a lot of kids photos published openly on Facebook for instance, and that has a much wider readership, and more information about identity, than here on AFF.

But generally, access to childrens photos on facebook are via friends, family, people that you know/they know you. That's why there are security settings. Do we really need to have a written rule of, "Don't post naked/near naked photos of minors"?

OPs intention is NOT untoward but we must all be aware of other peoples personal rights to privacy and decency, especially minors.

Its not something you would do at your local RSL swim club so why is it appropriate for tropical vacations?

The events pictured are almost all "staged" , ie organised by the locals in return for a fee paid by the cruise line, in this case Silversea Expeditions.
I assume that the Cruise line makes appropriate arrangements with the local chiefs , as everyone will be snapping away.

Stealing souls is an issue in some countries, but in this digitally instant world , privacy seems to be swamped by sheer numbers.

I am about to get back to finishing this TR.I have been considering how to respond to this criticism and have concluded I just feel sad.
Why should we inflict our moral values on a society that has absolutely different values to ours. The children were not performing in the photo complained about. This is what they do every day.To me it portrayedthe innocence and simplicity of the Melanesian life as it is now. They do not have our hangups re privacy.During the medical clinics the whole village would listen to the consultation.if they thought it was OK then they would sit down in the hot seat.
tgh these really aren't "staged".Sure they do it because they are paid but several times I was told how much they enjoyed doing it and tourists are ensuring that much of their culture is not lost. The performances in the Solomons were much as I had seen in 1969 when they were put on because a "white man"was present. And I wasn't paying then as I had just finished University.
These people need low impact tourists. They get nothing from the Chinese and Malaysians who are clear felling their forests.Money from the minerals and oil really doesn't get down to the village level. Can I encourage people to go.when you go do buy their artefacts even if you are not going to keep them.Much better than just handing out money. We always just accepted the first price.i really was annoyed by those who kept asking for best price even when the item they were haggling over was less than $A10.If you can afford a Silverseas cruise you can afford to pay over the odds in these villages.

And just for information last week I was allowed to take photos of my grandchildren at their swimming lessons as well at grandparents day at my granddaughter's school.in fact the teacher as we arrived encouraged the taking of photos.

It was hard to get this off my chest but now back to the TR.

The dancing continued.

Then it was the turn of the younger men-

They had a ball and got the crowd laughing-

That fellow is just demonstrating that not everything is traditional.but then a more serious performance telling the story of traditional healing-

Though the healer this time was a woman.

I am a firm believer in the idea that we should not lose the simplicity of childhood. In the words of Joseph Heller-"when I grow up I want to be a little boy'.
Today I succeeded.First the English woman and I warmed up the crowd-

At this point mrsdrron left for lunch.A younger woman came out of the crowd and we put on a memorable performance. If indeed laughter is the best medicine the village got a lifetime's worth that day.Despite threats no images of the performance have yet appeared.
So back to the people-

As usual I have a conversation with one of the older members of the village. Then it is time to go back to the ship for lunch-

While we are onshore a yacht has arrived-

It turned out to be a group of NZ scientists spending a few months in this part of the Solomons. The bird men on the Expedition team were in raptures as the group had rediscovered several bird species that were thought to be extinct.

After lunch it was back out for some snorkelling. There were some areas damaged by the tsunami but other areas with good coral and lots of small fish-

It is not that you bored, us it's just so much to take in. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

After the long day we were very tired, dined alone and retired early. The next day was to be Vanuatu. We were told that Loh,the island we were visiting, had never seen a doctor so another clinic was organised.

I have lost count, how many clinics have you participated in on this trip? 3, 4...

Pretty good effort IMO!

Unfortunately we were escorted straight to the health facility so missed the show.As well most of the village went to the show.It turned out that although no doctor visits Loh there is an American doctor on a neighbouring island.Nevertheless people turned up after the show and once again triaged themselves incredibly. My last patient though was a 50 year old woman who had a sore knee.but she had a high blood pressure, her glucose levels were very high and questioning revealed crescendo angina.back home she would have an urgent angiogram. Here unfortunately all I could do was give a letter to the nurse for the American doctor.I was able to start an ACE as the nurse had a supply.
After all this she was upset I didn't give her anything for her knee.Although told they didn't have aspirin I found some and told her it was for the knee.So we basically wandered through an empty village to get to the clinic-

And here is the clinic. We consulted on the verandah.

It was much better equipped than those clinics in PNG and the Solomons. The scales though were not in particularly good condition-
