I’m currently on a Finnair around the world ticket with my travel agent putting my Qantas frequent flyer number in for the Qantas, Finnair and American Airlines sectors.

My first sector Sydney to Bangkok credited to Qantas and interestingly it also credited to Finnair Plus giving me a nice dollop of Avios. I figured they would cancel out in due course but they’ve both managed to stick so far.

After my next sector, Bangkok to Düsseldorf via Helsinki, I was surprised to get an email from Finnair saying congratulations, I’ve reached silver level. On checking my Finnair account. I found that the flights had credited to Finnair also but not to Qantas. I didn’t mind this as again, there’s a nice lot of Avios in there and I won’t miss the Qantas SCs for that sector.

However, checking in for my next sectors, Vienna to Helsinki , the agent said they had to check me in for all of the following 3 sectors HEL-MIA-BCI as they were married (???). I didn’t notice then but these also had my Finnair Plus frequent flyer number in.

It hit me when I went to the Finnair lounges at Helsinki anirport and got directed to the business lounge rather the platinum lounge which I was looking forward to checking out and I was counting on the QFF SCs for these sectors.

A bit of chat on the Finnair Plus app got the numbers changed back to Qantas. Once you get past the stupid bot very easy to deal with.

The agent suggested the way the Finnair number got put in all the bookings was that I added the flight to my Finnair Plus app. It never asked me but I guess that’s the way it changed.

I guess not many people use the Finnair Plus app (good for buying Avios :)) but it is a trap if anyone was thinking about doing the same thing.

This is a potential problem with all airline apps. I don’t login to AA, BA, CX or QR (even though I have accounts). Fortunately they all have a “Guest” mode that you can load and manage a booking. Plus that usually sticks to the app even though you’re not logged in.

IB and I’m pretty sure AY, JL etc work the same but I don’t have accounts with them - I think? 🤔

Never come across it before. But I guess apps are relatively new in the grand scheme of things . Probably the only other one I’ve used is American Airlines with a similar Qantas booking and it didn’t grab it. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, lesson learned but it might be hard to avoid in future because Finnair and I think also QR give you free Wi-Fi when you’re logged into their app.

Why the hell they should unilaterally change the frequent flyer number in your booking is beyond me.

Agree, if you don't have a FF number with the other airline they can't remove your QF one. Or if you do, don't share it.

QF and AA use different PNRs but I’ve used the AA app for years to manage flights I’ve booked direct but always in guest mode to stop it replacing my QFF details with my somewhat redundant AA FF#.

QR, you just need to enter QR# via the wifi login. Don’t need to use the app at all. I haven’t been on AY for a while so don’t know if you can do same.

Because it associates the booking with your FF details when you load it up.

Exactly the same way you can add a missing booking to QF. When logged in to QFF, you add booking PNR and it’s straight in. No entering FF details.
