In September I travelled with my wife for three weeks for our first ever foray into the wilds of North America.

Stage 1. BNE Check-in

Our flights between BNE and SIN were Velocity awards in Y with a cash component for extra legroom. SIN-SEA return were commercial premium Y.

The SQ kiosks wouldn’t check us in so we were referred to an agent. She identified it was because the linked bookings had slightly different names. She fixed it up and referred it back to the kiosk. The kiosk continued to show us no love so this time we’re attended to by Ben, who appeared to be a more senior CSA handling calls from check-in staff using three phones and attending to real people, with complex issues. He said we didn’t have an ESTA attached to the bookings. I was sure I had organised them but in my mad scrolling of emails the fear grew. I came across “C B P” email subjects and assumed the “C” stood for Canadian. “What had I done?” I was madly thinking of ways to overcome the problem…sometimes new applications are processed quickly. Maybe they’ll let us board and by the time we get to SIN our ESTAs will have been issued. My heart was pumping so hard and my skull was aching. Thankfully, I realised C B P stood for U.S Customs and Border Protection and after showing Ben the right documents, we were free to complete in-person check-in. The CSA did confirm that they would have flown us to SIN and had the issue dealt with there if we couldn’t show our ESTA.

I didn’t take notes or a lot of photos so this report will just be a lot of reflections. Happy to answer any questions. Being my first North American trip, I utilised the services of a bricks and mortar agent my daughter had used for a three month European adventure earlier this year. The agent booked …flights into, within and from North America; Alaskan cruise, train-Anchorage to Whittier and some accommodation. I organised the award flights between BNE & SIN, SIN and some other accommodation, 5 day coach trip of the Rockies.

We had about a twelve hour layover in SIN and found it easier and possibly cheaper to stay in the in-terminal Aerotel. I enjoy airports so was happy to spend some time exploring and my loving, long-suffering wife shared the experience. The Aerotel room served its purpose but the included breakfast was a bit lacklustre particularly if gluten-free is required. But having a whole airport full of options, my wife wasn’t neglected.

Our A350-900 flight SIN-SEA was delayed approximately an hour once we were onboard with the reason varying between congestion on our route to load/engineering issues….partly i think due to the recalculation of fuel needs due to the prolonged ground wait with engines running. We still arrived at Seattle on time. First time in W and found premium economy met our needs well. Felt like luxury. Typical good SQ service. Have misplaced the menu but meals were great. Early in the flight loads of snacks set out in the rear galley. Actually got hungry late in the flight and very little left to eat out of the snack range and everything was highly processed packet-type junk. Crew had window shades shut early in the flight and we went for about 12 hours of the 14 hour flight in a twilight setting. Lasting impression of that flight is that it needed another meal or formal snack served.

Wow even on our SIN-BNE service leaving at 0955 there is lunch and a pre arrival snack. But that is in J. Seems strange that it isn't offered on a 14 hour flight. Even on our planes service back which is over night there is a sleeper service and you can take it in 2 sessions after take off and before landing.
i wouldn't be surprised at not offering it in Y but W I felt should at least be at least a small snack offered.

The menu is lunch and breakfast, with a range of cold snacks (sandwiches, chips, nuts etc). It’s similar to SIN-LHR, I wouldn’t expect three meals.

Yes, we were served lunch and breakfast with snacks available in the galley. By the time I was hungry mid-flight, only the highly processed packet junk was left, and very limited gluten-free. Maybe the return flight being lunch and dinner was more substantial. As drron mentioned, the catering didn’t seem much different to the BNE-SIN sector on the forward journey.
