First refurbished 767 enters service end of the month [Oct '12]

The problem is that they have said 7 will be retired. If that includes the international, then that would need something to replace it.

Issue is that we don't know which 7 are going. If it all the ex-BA birds, then yes, the international is getting a refresh. It's just that no-one at Qantas has specifically said which aircraft are going.

Aren't the BA birds the ones with the highest cycle and hour counts? Would make sense to scrap the whole lot of the same type, especially considering they use RR engines and (IIRC) the QF birds use GE engines, would streamline and specialise maintenance. That and refreshing the international birds means they still have an international config to fly.

If I were a gambling man (thankfully I'm not) and it is indeed 7 planes retiring I'd put my money on the ex-BA birds resting.

According to the QANTAS website it is 16 planes getting the refurb. That fits with 23-7=16.

But the dodgy part is I keep getting the number 3 (not 7) planes are retiring... (Did AJ mention any 767s retiring in the AGM?)

Given that the BA Birds (ZX*) have RR engines, whereas the QF birds (OF*) all have GE engines, I thought the base assumption was that the BA birds were the first ones to go and thus not getting the refit.

So in actual fact we are no wiser on the SYD/HNL route.

Booked on QF3/4 next Feb...really hope something other than the old worn red rattler of a 767 is there to greet me.

I'll take some new carpet, curtains and lighting any day to give me the illusion I am flying something half-new :D

Funny you mention that, of the 767's that QF have sent away, they have all been -OG* birds. None of the ZX's have been sent away yet.

Where did you find the info about which ones have been sent away?

This website is a good source:

Qantas Fleet | Airfleets aviation

Clearly shows that -OGA, B, C and D have left the fleet and E and F are in storage, which more or less means left the fleet awaiting sale/breakup but still Qantas owned. Oh BTW is says there are 24 767's in the Qantas fleet, but a very close look shows that it is also including the dedicated freighter, so 23 passenger a/c.

And another good source if you know what you looking for:

CASA Search -- CASA Aircraft Register

We are going 1st March SYD/HNL in the old QA clunker looks like, so so will take iPad, seat cushion and sunnies.

Why would you want a refurb bird in J to HNL? Are they going to cover the Dreamtime seats the same way that they are covering the Millennium seats? Do they fly Millennium equipped aircraft to HNL?

Do they fly Millennium equipped aircraft to HNL?
Yes, it's called Jetstar. Now if Qantas were to fly Millenniums to HNL, that would make for one expensive dinner service

Was hoping for a Skybed MK11 seat:), but really any refurb would be better than the current 767's.

Buy another 40 seats on the same flight and you will get your wish!

Reasonable assumption - but Qantas have not actually said that is what is happening! That is all....

Why couldn't they have started late Novermber :(

I got lucky and got an A330 but I actually don't mind the dreamtime seats (not international standard I agree).....

The big rumour that keeps on rearing it's head over and over is that QF will take a couple of 787's before Jetstar.

I don't personally believe it but there is some interesting 'evidence' that keeps on popping to support the rumours!!! Currently the rumour is that QF domestic will take a couple as 'show pieces' for the future fleet......

What date are you flying on?

Wish they would make that permanent for that route. At least the A330 has the lie angled beds in Business Class.

That would be nice. The A333s carry 297 people - 6 more J pax and 63 more Y pax than an international configured 767. You think QF could easily sell another 60 seats on this route?

Are there operational or economic factors that work against using an A333 (e.g. principally more expensive to fly an A333 vs. a 767)? One thought is that it should be economically favourable given JQ operate their own A332 to HNL and are doing fine. Would probably justify better the J cost to have even Skybed Mk I vs. Dreamtime J (some will argue against that, I know).
