First refurbished 767 enters service end of the month [Oct '12]

The comment about saving on fuel is compared to seat back IFE, so QF haven't done it to save fuel as such.

LCC's aren't the only airlines looking to reduce unnecessary fuel use.

... You clearly think iPads are a cheap option and would gladly pay much more to see 767's refurbed with in seat IFE on aircraft that will only last in the fleet for a couple of years. Glad you don't make business decisions in my company... Perhaps you should tell other airlines looking at the same technology that it's a cheapskate option. </end rant>.

Now back to the plane. J definitely looks good, although the wood look does look a bit plastic. I'm still not a fan of leather seats overall, but next time I will upgrade to try it out.

The Y seats are almost the same, but noticed the seat felt better padded than before. Also the headrest is leather too. The iPad i noticed was on flight mode now and after take off the WiFi was turned on so you could use it. It also states it has anti theft technology in place. It easily slips into the holder on the back of the headrest. My only complaint with it was the streaming took some time to get going, not sure if that was a server issue or not. the content also pauses during cabin announcements too. Had no problems getting my iphone onto the stream too.

Overall I am pretty happy with it. I can see on longer legs it will be a lot better, MEL-SYD you don't get a lot of time to watch shows.

Yes you can. As long as your case has a flap it can go into the holder.

Actually it was one thing I didn't see. I don't recall seeing a holder on the bulkhead though.

I looked out of the window walking through the MEL QP to the J lounge and noted the rego. I've been keeping an eye out lately for it.

iPads are a perfect solution for an aircraft that will only be around for 2-5 years (if that)

They have done a proper solution with somewhere to store the iPad besides on your tray table

They have done it better than DJ that's for sure

Am I one of the few that don't watch/need IFE on a golden triangle flight? I think the tablet option works fine - remembering Y meal trays are tiny, a tablet can fit in an upright position as well - even better with the option to tuck it into the seat in front.

If I'm desperate I pull out my phone and listen to music, but most of the time it's just nice not to be bombarded with information for a little while.

No, you're not alone. It helps that I don't usually watch a lot of TV to start with. I cope quite well without IFE. Maybe the only thing I'd tune in for is the news.

Of course, many people are not like us and need entertainment, even for a 90 minute flight (block time), so IFE-less aircraft is not quite ideal.

Though Qantas and Virgin both have plenty of routes around the 90 minute mark without any IFE and people survive!

Just a Q about the 767 refurbs as part of this has Qantas actually removed the old IFE system or is it left in situ? If in situ does the radio still work?

Yes they still have the overhead screens and audio in the seats. They still put the news on that, doesn't stream to the iPad yet.

I'm not sure why they did it that way but it isn't fake leather.
