From 21 February 2011, First Tax and Duty Free as well as SYD Tax and Duty Free Stores Australia-wide will no longer be partners in the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.
This means that after 20 February 2011, Qantas Frequent Flyer members will no longer be able to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points on purchases made in these stores.
Members will continue to earn points on in-flight duty free purchases as well as on duty free purchases made in DFS Galleria Stores.

Well that sucks.

Always nice to triple dip on the way back into Brisbane (cheap booze, 1 point per $1 on Woolies mastercard and 1 point per dollar due to QFF membership).

First Hertz & Thrifty and now this. What the hell is going on!!!

I guess this is to force people to buy on board. Frankly for me, it will push me to buy in SIN/BKK if possible on the upcoming trips.

Meh ... I rarely use them anyway; sometimes with the old 20% MEL arrivals Skybus voucher, but this is no more.

I actually find myself avoiding purchasing D/F in OZ as 1) it's reatively expensive and, 2) I object to the forced marathonic march from emigration in MEL/SYD. (Same for the JR duty Free now in AKL )

Yesterday I collected from WLG:

Jagermeister 1000ml

Bombay Sapphire 1000ml

No big deal as I only go overseas 3-4 times a year and they stopped giving QFF points for tobacco purchases a while back anyway.

I will make sure I now buy any duty free in SIN/BKK/HKG and will only buy in Australia if for some reason I have not been able to purchase overseas.

So you will buy in BKK/HKG on you're inbound flight and put it in your baggage for the return flight? Thailand only allows 1 litre to be brought in AFAIK.

Really… I would never have picked you for the Jaegermeister type! My sister bought some last year on the way back from the UK and it’s relatively untouched still :p

And a shame about not earning points anymore, but I don’t travel nearly enough or spend nearly enough to make many points! I still wouldn’t buy onboard.

Unfortunate that Thailand only allows 1 litre duty free on arrival.

Usually SIN/BKK/HKG are my last transit stops before Australia and I can purchase there. Only hassle I see is if the alcohol wanted is not available from that airport like Bombay Sapphire at SIN in November.

And for comaprison sakes 2x 1L Bombay Sapphire costs ~AUD42 in SIN with a free 200 mL bottle thrown in while it is ~AUD64 in Australia. For that sort of saving I could almost buy on arrival into SIN and re-check luggage to Australia.

I havent paid $64 for a 1L bottle of Sapphire in SYD - did you mean 2L?

I use First duty Free for convenience. I have no idea how prices stack up. I pay on the way out and pick up on the way back to save carrying on the flight.

Never generated huge numbers of points for me every little bit helps, so a bit disappointing.

To pick up on serfty's point it is a pain at Melbourne and Sydney getting through the duty free section after clearing immigration, it is like going on an assault course.

HKG will not allow you to board a flight to Australia with LAGs over 100ml. There us secondary screening upon boarding.

SIN is good for DF purchases so long as you have enough time. They normally have a 90 min cut-off for purchases to be delivered to the boarding gate.

What is the situation in BKK?

I don't believe it has changed for some time, you cannot buy duty free liquor over 100ml when flying to Australia. Happy to be proven wrong though as this would make my life easier.

If I want to buy in BKK I end up buying on the inbound flight (max 1 litre) and putting it in my luggage on the return.

Ah well - looks like I wont be restocking for a while then. I have six litres of Bombay currently...

Really? :( Nuance has obviously successfully lobbied the Australian government to monopolise duty free purchases into Australia.

I will make sure I have plenty of time in future.

I thought they started allowing duty free alcohol purchases but obviously I have my information wrong.
