Re: Duty free frequent flyer points

They charge for bags as well now?

Wow. Nuance have a lot to answer for really. Stupid CC surcharges, over-the-top pricing.

I can buy my favourite Gin in various Middle Eastern countries for sub-$20AUD. In Australia, it's $65.

I can get a bottle of Absolut in NZ for around $18AUD and it's stupidly over-priced here.

They were charging $1 for those recyclable bags, but not for bags on pre purchased goods last time I went through in April

Wow. What a rort they have going. I'm sure they blame the airport rent. But strange the rip off is at all airports. And why can they afford massive staff duty free discounts. It is rare that I shop there, and now will pretty much blacklist all of their stores.

They charge like this because they think they can get away with it...it is an absolute rort here in AU.The margins are very high and now with the cr card surcharge & charging for bags? What's next?Virtually any other country in the region is cheaper so let's vote with our feet...wine is certainly cheaper at Dan's and spririts are not far off. I understand rents and wages are high, maybe it's time for a no frills DF store!

Easy to get away with it when they lobby the government to disallow alcohol to be purchased (and taken onboard) at certain overseas ports.

The Australian government should be ashamed.

Saw some D/F prices last night at SIN.

Winfield Blue 250's SGD34.50 (~AUD26), Baileys Irish Cream 1L for SGD26.50 (~AUD19).

SYD have been reducing the staff discounts, now it's only around 10%.

I usually fly to Europe, but my last trip went through LAX.

I picked up two 1L bottles of Gentleman Jack for U$70 (and got a 375mL bottle thrown in for free as a promotion), so around $66

The same 2 x 1L bottles in BNE would have set me back $106, plus credit card fee, plus bag fee!

I know where I'm getting my booze from now :)

edit: for reference Dan Murphy's charge $53 for the 700mL bottle.

Well there is reason in my madness for routing my return from HKG via SIN. The day time flight SIN-SYD-BNE is one reason, and the opportunity to purchase DF in SIN is a bonus.

And of course the business benefit of a day with the team in Singapore office is a major benefit for this current project, proving huge value for the time and effort.

I would encourage you to consider if you would still like to make purchases from them, I think they are gouging passengers as they have no competition.
Totally agree. I will only purchase duty free tobacco from them or when I cannot get duty free alcohol overseas.

Winfield Blue 250's SGD36 (~AUD29), Baileys Irish Cream 1L for SGD28 (~AUD23).
Even cheaper in HKG and is a shame one cannot purchase duty free from HKG to bring back to Australia.

Bombay Sapphire gin is HKD160, Tanqueray Gin is HKD160, Gordon's Gin is HKD120, from memory Baileys Irish Cream is HKD180, 250gms Drum tobacco is HKD175 but not sure of the quality so may leave that one for now. It was almost worth purchasing in HKG and putting the stuff back into checked luggage.

Australian duty free prices are a joke....

At one stage I recall 20% - thanks for the clarification. So they're even putting the screws on flight crews now!

Don't get me wrong... Duty free (cigs + booze) in Australia is cheaper than retail in 95% of cases. But DF is still up to 300% dearer than overseas.

It seems that Nuance (Australia) is using high local prices to their advantage. I can't see as a huge global player that their distributors are ripping them off. Perhaps we are subsidising some of their other operations? Although, one strange thing ... price of cigs and booze in SIN. Very low DF. Heavily taxed retail. Hmm. Maybe as Australians, our culture tells us we should be ripped off!!!!

Duty Free has always been terrible in Australia by comparison to most ports that are a direct flight, regardless of who owns the chain, someone has to help the airport make money and pay for those renovations that see you now walking through the store to get to the gate in a lot of cases.

Davidoff Gold/Lights 200 are $18AUD in Qatar, and were almost $80 when I purchased a carton at First last.
Davidoff Magnums are $28AUD in Qatar, and not available in AU (Davidoff claim they didn't have enough of a market in AU to justify the printing of health warnings on the packets so they ceased sale).

Hendricks Gin and Tanqueray No. 10, around $65AUD here, and sub-$20 in Qatar.

Even prices in the USA are a lot cheaper (last time I bought the same cigarettes in SFO, last year, it was $26AUD a carton for the standard ones and $36AUD for the magnums; we are totally bent over the table and rammed without any suitable lubrication).

The one thing I buy DF is 100 proof Southern Comfort, which for some reason you can't buy in normal stores here in AU... (They can't even order it in, even places that claim they can get anything) so price isn't really a concern...

As for the lack of points, well considering the amount of points I would get from such purchases is minimal (a small fraction of the points I got from the CBR-international airport flight I'd taken only an hour earlier) I'm not too worried...
