Managed to get a FJ redemption from SFO-NAN-AKL in business with a 12 hour daytime layover in Nadi for early November for ~ 90k points. Taxes were minimal (75 USD). Will probably stay in New Zealand for 1-6 days before flying back to Oz.

There were no seats of QF for months either side.

Has anyone tried this somewhat avant garde route? Is this a good use of points?

Hopefully they direct you to the soon to be reopened CX lounge in SFO.

The NAN layover might be a bit if a drag with an early arrival? I wonder if you can go to the FJ lounge, freshen up and then exit the airport and spend the day somewhere nice before heading off to AKL?

Wishful thinking. I was lucky to get even this measly redemption on compromised, lousy Fiji Airways.

Note: it is a cardinal rule that I generally don't post on forums unless my post contains arrogance, cynicism or sarcasm. I just realised my last post contained all three. Hope you enjoyed the chuckle

Will be doing the same in late October.

Originally felt like a bit of a last-resort as I thought we'd be in the dated A330 product. I decided to double-check when I saw FJ had taken delivery of another A350, and it looks like that will be flying the SFO-NAN leg. Winning!

While I can relate to it feeling like a compromise, it's still a nicely-priced trans-Pacific business seat, and reviews of the A350 product look very promising. I'm in the process of figuring out what we can do with the lengthy dwell in NAN before our QF flights back to Aus that evening - will share the good news if there is any :)
