PLEASE INCLUDE DATE, FLIGHT NUMBER, ORIGIN & DESTINATION IN ALL REQUESTS
>>>> ADDED BY ADMIN (6 Sept 2010) <<<<

Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

Thanks!

See this thread for hints on how to read loadings:

If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

Original thread title: update on QF93 on 12 sept

Appreciate it if someone could check EP for loadings.

The loadings suggest J and W are full. However the seat maps suggest that a few may be available (possibly spoken for but not yet allocated to the passenger)

The seat map is never an indication of loading. Zeros across the board in J and W mean just that - no seats available for sale or upgrade.

And especially so for the seat map being irrelevant when you get to J0 territory. Once a certain percentage of seats are allocated, the ability to select seats gets blocked (presumably to leave some flexibility to check in agents), so the purchasers of the last seats may not be able to allocate them until check in.

Suppose now is as good as any time to ask about QF10 LHR to PER 13th May. WP looking for a Y to J upgrade. Or is this too far out to get a good idea?

Oh dear. I suppose this is good news for Qantas if they're filling up the premium cabins on these flights with paying pax. Pretty frustrating when as a WP, booking months out with the upgrade request in early, you can't get an upgrade. Probably a whinge for another thread.

Thanks for checking :)

Note the X9 two weeks out ... implies they are having trouble conning anyone into these 789 hard seats.

So how profitable would these flights be for QF if they've filled J and Y+ with revenue fairs (minus the very few released points redemptions). For my flight over, there are about a dozen free seats on the seating map. Lets say they only sold 50% of Y seats. Would this still be economically viable?

Hard to know. The long distances may mean some seats are never filled to reduce payload- like QF7/8
In a PER summer takeoff weight may even have to be reduced further.
Despite the mega hype, I have my doubts about this routing. I think give it a year or so. The price of oil is on an slow but inexorable rise. There will be a tipping point and it will be the oil price (just like the nonstop all business SIN-EWR which was killed off when oil price became too much)

The other worthwhile note is that Y fares may be lower yielding than freight. Who knows what the 787 is carrying in its cargo hold apart from passenger luggage which unlike the US flights are a lot lighter

Good luck for your flight today Daver6. Lucky you are not starting from Melbourne so that eliminates about 4 hours.
Coming home on the 787 to Perth can be almost 2 hours shorter with favourable tail winds.

A colleague and partner were switched to the 787 last weekend to come home from MEL-PER in economy. He confirmed the seats are too narrow for longhaul and it was a quick flight.

Thanks :) I do have another 5 hours in BA Y from LHR to TLV after though. Yikes!

Will report on the "experience" if I survive.

I don't envy you; @cove was referring to LHR-PER and PER-MEL, not the other way with QF9 which is timetabled at over 17 hours from PER.

Getting to TLV via LHR is not how we do our work flights. We have a staff member going this month for a conference. It wasn’t my turn.

What option do you use? CX has horrible layovers and I'd rather not fly LY. No other one stop options that I'm aware of.

Yes you are correct about CX layovers Daver6.
Previously I think our staff went thru IST from Hong Kong.
I went thru London myself.
