Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

See this thread for hints on how to read loadings:


If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

Hi again - here's the loading... and amazingly, right now you could book a classic business seat award for this flight! There are at least 7 seats still for sale in J, with no less than 4 for sale in the cheapest fare bucket (I), and those 2 available in U are the award seats. Unfortunately, this still doesn't mean an upgrade is guaranteed, but signs are better than you would normally expect to see at this point, particularly during peak xmas travel time. Aside from Y, which is sold through but for the highest 2 fare buckets, it's fairly wide open.

wow at such short notice a J seat availability to North America at Christmas time. This must be rare, no??

It's a Classic Award which is a chunk of points plus a fairly modest co-payment. Modest in comparison to the full cash fare.

Based on above, yes, you could book a one-way classic business award (U) fare using 108,400 points +$308 (fees & taxes), per the screen above... if it's still there! But realise there's no guarantee of a return flight being available later, and a one-way revenue fare would be much higher than the return leg of the return fare. This assumes you are coming back, or coming back in this direction.

On the phone to Qantas, let’s see if they will refund by flights let me book these points flights and upgrade
I don't believe they can cancel only the outbound leg without needing to re-price > re-ticket a one-way fare home for the inbound, if you secure that outbound as an award J seat. Most days in January, a one-way economy from YVR-SYD is between CAD$3,200 & $3,800!

It's frustrating seeing a classic / base points award fare there and available, while you are sweating on an upgrade request, but be cautious you don't lose all or part of your booking or required flights or end up with a ludicrously priced return Y seat in the process of dealing with QF! Good Luck!

If it helps while waiting, you can check your fare rules for AU > North America here. If you don't have Flex fares, there will likely be penalties, and a refund may not be an option at all.

Hi guys,

I'm a platinum and heading to the UK (MEL-LHR) on QF9 on 24th, I requested and upgrade to Y+ on booking, but I've now got enough points to go J if that is more likely? Can you request both, or would requesting J delete my Y+?

Y looks pretty full based on what I can see as a plat, but seat alert shows half of y+ blocked...

When you request a J upgrade you can also select an option to upgrade to Y+ should J not be available.

I think you'll need to cancel your existing upgrade request to and re-submit it when the J option.

Actually it would almost have been worth it, but there was only one seat available and I need a couple of seats and the cancellation costs.

I would have paid extra (about $1000 a seat) but would have had a business seat there and premium economy on the way back which I would have requested an upgrade on. I would have saved on total points and earn extra status credits.

Anyway back to waiting.

What’s really interesting is one of the two blocked seats on your plan is next to me. I’m still hoping that’s a good sign.

So if I read your original post correctly there are 9 premium economy spots available, business is less clear to me there are 7 j seats but are there and additional 6 available? 13 total?

Ok, so you have another very light load for the inbound, but no classic award seats (in any class) on that one. They may well open up later, but what you see below with at least 9 for sale in business ‘I’ class is about as good as it ever gets.

You need to wait until after T minus 7 days for top tier upgrades like CL and P1 to clear, and then if there is still good numbers 1-2 days out you might be in luck. There’s a few more in Y+ then, too, but Y is lighter.

Here’s the numbers:

On the number of seats available; the availability across fare buckets is not coughulative; it’s just the amount the airline is willing to sell in each fare bucket. There is likely no more than 7 seats left for sale, and that’s in Flex business. There are also still seats for sale in regular Business and other buckets, but with each seat sold, you would see the J7 number come down. The reason there are more seats open on the seat map is simply that more people than the remaining number of seats to be sold have not yet selected seats.

Flex ticket - all seats available in front and back?

I have a Y Flex ticket. I expected that I was able to see lots of empty seats so that I could pick it whatever I like. When I "managed booking" in the airlines website, I was surprised to see that there were very few seats available at the back of the plane.
 
Hi everyone - I can imagine the answer but worth asking...
I am flying SYD-BKK on Monday 26 December on QF23 - I have an upgrade request in for 2 of us from Y to J - I am sure the flight will be 100% fully booked, but if a kind soul could look at the loading that would be great. Many thanks.
