Background to this thread
We have noticed an increase in the posting of questions about seat availability on specific flights. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with specific questions about availability on specific flights. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.
We have therefore created this new consolidated thread where you can ask questions about seat availability on specific flights. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve useability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread
Please post questions about availability of specific flights or upgrade probability in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, date, origin and destination and any other relevant detail.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

See this thread for hints on how to read loadings:


If looking for, say Qantas points upgrades, look for A class for First, mid to high D or any I class for Business and any R for Premium Economy.

Look for the most expensive category of the cabin YOU are currently booked in as being sold out e.g. J0 to first, W0 to Business & Y0 to PE for increased op-up chances. Also, look for availability on the discount premium buckets (A, P, I, D, U, T & Z inventories).

Conversely, look for high numbers in the discount economy buckets (N, O, Q, E & X inventories) for reduced op-up chances.

Seat maps can be a VERY rough guide but note that just because a seat is not showing as allocated does not mean that seat hasn't been sold. Not everyone pre-selects seats.

At the end of the day I would suggest trying for the return leg to arrive better. Remember its a lottery and no guarantee which ever you apply for.

I have 97,000 QFF points, 470 status credits and am Silver status.
What I want to know are opinions on the best/most efficient use of as many of my points as possible (+$$$ if necessary) to upgrade the SYD-DFW leg at least to a more comfortable seat with extra leg room as the highest possible priority. I am 187cm tall and leg room is important to me.
I can suffer the shorter legs in cattle class if I have to, but the SYD-DFW/DFW-SYD legs are going to be pure torture if I can't get somewhere more comfortable.

Obviously I would love to upgrade all the legs, but I realise I probably don't have enough points for that given Qantas's ridiculously inequitable point earn/burn ratio where you earn 10 points for taking a flight that will cost you 40,000 points to buy as a reward.

What are these flights, if someone knows the airline codes? I haven't booked these myself so I have no idea whether these are flexible economy, normal economy or discount economy? I'm assuming the later. Can anyone decode the details and tell me what these are in normal english please?

What would you do with this many points if these were your flights? Advice/opinions please.

Your outbound flights on QF are in Economy Q, which is discount economy. You can upgrade PER-SYD if it's available, for 25,000 points, but you have no option to upgrade SYD-DFW, unless a Bid Now upgrade auction opportunity should come your way.

On the way back, you're in Economy S, which is standard Economy for upgrade purposes. You could request upgrades for either leg, though DFW-SYD is 100,000 for Y to J, and 62,500 for Y to Y+.

You can buy extra leg room seats in 'manage my booking' at any time (at least on the inbounds), and given your status, the booking class and the popularity of this flight, it may be your best option.

Off topic but you only have a 1 hour window when you get to Sydney to transfer to your International flight ?

All I can see is Qantas saying I'm not eligible for an upgrade on the outbound flights, so I've had to pay an extra $190 for the SYD-DFW leg and 8500pts for the PER-SYD leg just to get in an exit row. And of course that didn't go smoothly at all because nothing that is completely automated on the internet and avoids all contact with real human beings ever works seemlessly, so now I have a claim and refund to be processed with Qantas for their cough booking system that still charges your credit card even when you've specified for the seat selection to be paid using points. And none of that is going to happen until Monday because another lie is that you book with Qantas because they have staff available 24/7 - except of course they don't when it all turns to 5h!t and the customer is complaining, then you have to go on hold for as long as it takes for you to lose the will to live.

Yeah I saw that too. It's not gonna happen is it? Not a chance in hell is my guess. That'll be fun when I miss my flight and then when I do arrive my luggage catches up with me just as I'm leaving again.

I may as well start the case for compensation with ACA now!

I'd be getting onto QF now and getting them to move you to an earlier flight to SYD.
 
Unfortunately a lot easier said than done. If I was doing all the bookings myself, then no dramas, but in this case it's being done for me by others, and those people are extremely unapproachable and personality-wise difficult and prickly to deal with such that asking for what they would consider "special treatment" is not really recommended in the job security stakes.

I know how weird it sounds, but I'm better off I think packing strategically for the very high likelihood that I'll be missing the flight and/or being separated from my luggage for an extended period while I get redirected through LA or San Francisco instead of DFW.

In these itineraries, the fare class shows up ahead of the cabin class - e.g. for your first flight: ‘Class: QEconomy’, and the inbounds show ‘Class: SEconomy’.

You can also find the fare class in QF Manage My Booking, as well, next to the cabin class, in brackets.

I've done these flights a few times, and can guarantee there will be several on your Perth flight who will be connecting to QF7. I've yet to have an issue; the departure time for QF7 is often delayed.

The bigger issue in my experience is that Perth check-in opens relatively late (4am?) and there will be many people connecting onwards to international flights. I've been in the scenario where the queue took too long to process and I didn't get checked in in time for the flight (this was before I had any QF status).

Thanks pjm99au. I was on QF1 and 2 in june this year, did not get upgrade as QF WP for both legs. this is a busy and profitable route for QF.

I have trouble finding availability especially on the return leg. We're actually connecting to/from JL413/414 (NRT-HEL) but the boss might like if we're not stranded in Japan for too long - though it's a good place to spend time in... :)

That's hardly 'weird', even if others suggest QF7 is routinely held if there's late running ex PER. A spare pair of (for males) socks and jocks, plus a polo or other shirt, in one's carryon is sound practice, although you sound like you want two of each. They don' weigh much.
