So I booked a emirates flight using Qantas points and the flight was cancelled and they rebooked me to a flight the next day(flight cancelled around 10:30pm)

So I had to stay in a hotel for another night and pay for food

Because it was paid using Qantas points(classic reward) can and do I claim with Qantas or emirates and does anyone have a link or email address?

Was this a flight from your home port, or were you down route at the time?

You mention they cancelled it at 1030pm, which is very late! What time was it supposed to depart?

It was from home port, canceled and rebooked 10:30pm Monday, was supposed to leave 8:50am Tuesday, was rebooked to 8:50am Wednesday

Why does everyone always think to claim with Qantas?!

Ultimately, you always need to claim with the carrier that cancelled your flight, not the codeshare or who you booked through, the actual airline metal you are flying on.

Because 9 times out of 10, that’s what the operating airlines tells codeshare customers to do. Qantas staff do the same.

I didnt think you could claim from your home port, because you incur no costs staying at home another night, especially since notified the night before not the morning of when you may have already departed.

AFAIK Travel Insurance would not cover delay at home port for this reason, as it only kicks once you have left Australia.

Because that's the mantra the industry pushes to its customers: "Go to your agent or whoever sold the ticket to you and ask them...". Which in this case would be QF.
Yeah, but who actually goes back to webjet or flight centre or some bizzare Chinese ticket consolidator to ask for comp or reimbursement.
I've heard people blame Qantas for UA cancellations, same as blaming Qantas if QR have made them miss their connections due to delays.

Sorry I live in Melbourne but took a flight to Sydney so had to stay in Sydney overnight

For cancellations or delays on the day of departure, I've never heard of a Qantas person telling them to go back to their codeshare carrier.
They would have to go back to their agent or other airline if they wanted a refund for the cancelled flight of course, as they hold the money.
Maybe in schedule change scenarios <72hrs out from departure. Not on the day.
Staff would bearly even know how to filter for codeshare passengers, let alone care.

Since this is an international flight, the terms of the Montreal Convention are in play. Although the convention does not provide compensation for delayed/cancelled flights as say EU261 does, it does offer reimbursement for out of pocket expenses incurred due to a cancellation, including hotels you booked on reliance of the flight operating on time, lost wages, etc.

If it was separate tickets, one to Sydney, and the EK flight from Sydney, for all intents and purposes SYD is the home port, and the passenger would be expected to have accommodation there.

I’m not sure whether Montreal would be applicable here for that scenario, as opposed to a through ticket.

EK should be on the hook for any costs of getting to the airport, and back, if that’s what the passenger did. Plus any lost hotel accommodation on the first night which couldn’t be used because of the cancellation.

Travel insurance might be the most likely avenue here. But worth following up with EK at first instance. See what the say.

Nobody has commented on the food. Is this a claimable item? After all you still have to buy food regardless, home or away, with or without a delay.
Food can be claimable and is often included in compensation or assistance packages provided by the airline. The cost of eating out or buying a single meal is often multiples of what you could do it for at home. In the corporate world people get per diems for food, even though they would still have to eat at home.

That’s not true. Home port does not equal port of origin.

Pax could be travelling on two one way tickets, driven from a rural area, international tourist etc, Many examples of where a pax would still be entitled to accomodation when the first leg of their trip is affected.

You should be able to claim the cost of the night in the hotel (Tues night), plus lunch Tues, dinner Tues and breakfast Wed from Emirates. As long as you have receipts it should be straightforward. The cancellation email should have EK points of contact to make the claim.
