Flight cancelled, claim hotel?

That’s not true. Home port does not equal port of origin.

Pax could be travelling on two one way tickets, driven from a rural area, international tourist etc, Many examples of where a pax would still be entitled to accomodation when the first leg of their trip is affected.
It’s not always true. But the presumption if your ticket is ex-SYD that you are originating there, and accommodation is not usually included. Jetstar for example uses ‘home airport’ as the distinguishing criteria.

Whether or not a delay is within or outside the carrier’s control can also play an issue.

But if it was booked on points ... it would have been an EK prime flight .. and not codeshare ...
ahh yes, valid point …. well then I’m sure EK would have said call your travel agent. 100% we can be sure an airline employee will incorrectly direct you to another party who’s not responsible during any IROPS :p

You might make that assumption but I think airlines are smart enough to know not all people who buy a ticket live in the port of origin. If that was the intent it would be worded as such. Home airport / home port is not that.
