Flight Delay - QF1 - Wed 15 Jan 25

This flight is further delayed, with qantarse provide little to no detail. They now expect to fly out after midday. They should have to pay people compensation for this mess. They have also indicated it may be cancelled altogether. Which is what they should have done before they trapped people in Singapore
Been burned by tis airline so many times now. They are blacklisted for me now. Not worth the risk booking with this expensive airline that operates like a budget one
I'm guessing your username @FFS is not a TLA (Three letter acronym) for Frequent Flyer Scheme:p. And good luck with sorting this mess out with Qantas.

It's probably not widely known that in cases of irregular operations like these, it's probably better to be at the airport where staff have quite a bit of leeway to rebook on whatever option is available (regardless of alliance) even if you have to push slightly for it.

This is a 31-hour delay so I would certainly have pushed for SQ, CX, MH options if those were available.
It's definitely not well known to most people that you can push for a reaccomodation onto other flights - and it doesnt have to be on their own partners.

The phone agents can also do the same if you push them for it - but you need to know that it's possible to begin with and not just accept the random information they give you. The sad reality is that most people aren't extremely knowledgeable FF that knows about iRROPs situations and blindly follow the instructions they're given.

Yes, but if it wasn’t a UK crew, QF could draw on any number of crews already in Singapore to operate the LHR flight… indeed the fresh crew operating the onwards QF2 to Sydney could have instead flown the QF1 back to London
They can do that anyway - all the crew in Singapore are fair game to operate anything, but the result is still the same that something has to be disrupted. They are currently sending a whole crew to London from Australia.

Oh wow! I didn’t think they would send aussie crews as no hotels etc?

Interesting to know!

Not per the the conditions of carriage unfortunately, which only state another qantas service as the minimum requirement.

Of course you can ask, and might get results, but it’s not in the contract of carriage.

Had the flight been leaving the EU, or on an EU carrier, might have been a firmer argument for another carrier (although that’s a bit of a grey area too unfortunately).

Rebooking

Rebook to another QF operated and marketed flight or rebook to another QF marketed flight operated by Emirates if the schedule changed flight is operated by Emirates:

  • On the same day; or
  • A day either side; or
  • To the next available; or
  • To connecting QF operated and marketed flights as permitted by the route map; or
  • To connecting QF marketed flights operated by Emirates or QF operated and marketed flights as permitted by the route map if the schedule changed flight is operated by Emirates; and
  • In the same cabin and same class; or
  • In the lowest available class in cabin (except P/U/Z/X) if the same class is not available.
Note: If a schedule change to a QF operated and marketed flight or QF marketed flight operated by Emirates causes a misconnection to another airline’s connecting flight, rebook:

  • To an alternative connecting flight on the same airline; and
  • In the same cabin and same class; or
  • In the lowest available class in cabin if the same class is not available; or
  • Rebook in accordance with the ticketed fare’s route map and permitted booking class

Yes, confirms rebooking to another QF service only… but a long way of saying it! (or to another emirates flight if the schedule change is caused and operated by emirates)

Have had excellent experiences being rebooked with other airlines at the airport in the past, and would always advocate people go to the airport to sort these problems out.

One of the issues with this particular flight has been the times the further delays were announced; when the additional 7 hour delay was announced at 3:30am local time it wasn’t clear if there would be staff at the airport at this hour.

By the time the additional overnight delay was announced (around 8am local), my wife was quite happy to go with the flow and enjoy a day in Singapore (there are worse places to be stuck).

I did try rebook via phone, but as mentioned elsewhere, only offer was a downgrade to Y.

that last line can see QF rebooking you via other airlines. Which i suspect is why it can be "lax" sometimes and they just rebook you with other airlines.

True… and applies to connections. However, it only appears to extend rebooking outside of the original connecting carrier if the fare rules are met. If it was a QF/AA fare only, you’d be stuck with AA. if it allowed any carrier from the US gateway to the final destination, you could book UA/DL etc. (or any carrier from the european gateway to the final destination).

Of course that’s just the rules, and as we know airport staff have a lot of leeway… especially in the USA for example. And probably in europe too given EU261.

I’m not sure there’s a right to be accommodated on another airline in the event of IRROPS.
