Hopefully the QF transfer bus is operating, per @TheInsider 's comment.

Whenever you land in a new country (and have a domestic connection), you will have to get your bags, head through customs and re-check them.

So your bags will be checked through BNE-SYD-DFW. At SYD, it's only a terminal transfer (plus security and immigration).

At DFW you go through the whole US security theatre, and re-check your bags to MIA.

For the purpose of travel to the USA this is correct. But it is not a universal rule.

For example in Thailand (pre-pandemic anyway, not sure now), transferring to some domestic destinations (eg coughet) via Bangkok, you would complete immigration in BKK, but not collect bags until reaching final destination.

And even in the US, it is not a universal rule (for example flying in from Canada, Dublin or Abu Dhabi, where immigration is done prior to departure rather than on arrival). So bottom line, lots of variations on what the rules are.
