My son is looking to fly from Melbourne to Denpasar leaving 07/07/12 returning 14/07/12 which is during school holidays and his dates are fairly inflexible. Prices over $1300 return. Does anybody have any suggestions for a cheaper option?

You could always see what the prices are via Darwin or Perth, Air Asia from Darwin or Perth to Bali is normally cheap. Alternatively, have a look at Virgin from Adelaide but you'd need to catch a sale.

Also, there are some killer accommodation deals on at the moment so if he hasn't organised somewhere to stay then lastminute.com.au or asiarooms.com would be good places to start.

Air Asia no longer fly to DPS from DRW.

Perhaps Virgin Australia to Perth and then thought to DPS..

Thanks for the replies will pass onto my son. He was hoping that he could get a direct flight but not holding out much hope that he will get a flight much cheaper.

Cheapest combination for those dates seem to be Jetstar via Darwin outbound and via Perth inbound, using a price beat with Tiger on the PER-MEL leg. Brings it down to a base fare of ~$1000.
