I think you will have to be a little more precise with the dates. Etihad home base is Abu Dhabi and they have numerous flights to different European cities including Heathrow. If you haven't already booked your VA flight to AUH then check the VA website for connection flights as they code share with Etihad to most European cities that Etihad flies to. I just checked on Cheap flights | Free flight comparison at Skyscanner.com.au and BA have a flight to Heathrow return $470 cheaper than Etihad in October.
