We used to like travelling with Korean Air ex Melbourne as their flights into Europe mostly departed from Seoul and arrived in their European destination in the afternoon or evening. (Nothing worse than arriving in Europe at 5am many hours before you can get into your accommodation, and we always try to avoid night flights on the outward journey if possible).

With the demise of the Korean Air Melbourne/Seoul service from March 2013, can anyone suggest another option which incorporates a daytime flight from Melbourne, a daytime departure from the Asian hub, and an afternoon/evening arrival into Europe. Itineraries requiring stopovers are fine.

Pretty sure SQ has a nighttime flight that would get you to EU in the middle of the day.

EK from SYD or PER used to have same day arrivals advertised. Only catch is the early departure from Oz

CX offers daytime flights MEL-HKG and HKG-LHR with a stopover in HKG.

SQ have a daytime flight MEL-SIN departing at 11.45 & 2 daytime flights SIN-LHR at 09:00 and 12:55 getting into LHR at 15:10 & 19:05 respectively. Or SIN-FRA (dept 13:55 - arriv 20:35), SIN-MXP (dept 13:55 - arriv 20:35).

For a daytime flight you have to leave early in the morning and then have a short connection time. Cathay's early morning departure is really the only flight leaving at that time heading towards Europe and it is just a fraction too late to connect to the afternoon flight from HKG to LHR.

The other alternative to arrive at a useful time would be a late night departure from Melbourne, with a short connection that would get you to London in the afternoon. You could fly with Cathy, Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, Thai or Emirates. Of course that would require a overnight portion.

What we used to like about Korean Air was a relatively civilised departure time (8.45am), the opportunity for a stopover in Seoul (often at Korean expense), and flights arriving in continental Europe in the afternoon. I should have also said that we aren't interested in flights to the UK.

Eithad leaves Melbourne at 11pm and arrives in LHR at about midday, with a 2 hour stopover at Abu Dhabi.

I know that the OP is in Melbourne but maybe look at some of the following: Syd: Asiana Airlines (via Sydney & Seoul), Eva Air (via Brisbane & Taipei) or really out there suggestions like Garuda (via Jakarta) or one of the following Air China, China Eastern or China Southern??

I originally had a look for JAL and ANA flights (Japan being the logical alternative to South Korea as a transit point) but seem to have gone awol over the last few years.

it's a problem living in the world's most liveable city..few flight options, as nobody wants to leave!

We found Etihad to Paris CDG an easy flight. Left MEL around 4.00pm and got into CDG a bit before 2.00pm, so by the time we got to a hotel, checked in etc., it was time for a light meal and an early night. The result was minimal jetlag.

You could always still use KE via SYD or BNE.
Most europe bound fares booked through a travel agent should include the free overnight stay in ICN.

The trouble is that you'd need to get to Sydney or Brisbane the night before to make the connection..

Got my flights confused. Etihad leaves MEL in the evening, but definitely only has the AUH stop on the way to CDG.

Have done both SQ day flights from SIN-LHR in economy, although never directly connecting from MEL. Both are very civilized (for economy flights anyway), nice to arrive in London mid afternoon or early evening having spent just normal "awake" time on the plane (although with MEL origin the 9am departure would fit better). With an overnight stay at Singapore they would fit nicely with the day or afternoon/evening flight from MEL-SIN.

Uncivilised early start, but you do get the option of doing the journey all in one day AND to about 20 different European destinations.
