Currently looking at bringing the mother in law across the ditch. Have looked at costings:
:(Virgin in $NZ 987
:(Air NZ on Oz site $A 785
:)Air NZ on NZ site $NZ 752
These are all on the exact same flights.
If I ring Virgin will they price match the NZ AirNZ site

Virgin don't do price matching. Why not just book the NZ flights on the NZ Site?

+1 to drewbles. Just book with NZ. All the VA code offers is an 'eligible sector' for Velocity and a status bonus if applicable. Actually, that's not entirely true, other benefits of booking the VA codeshare include the inability to pre-select a seat and an inability to easily get special service requests and special meal requests dealt with. Booking with NZ also lets you make the most of NZ's bundling options (ie VA Flexi fares are outrageously expensive in comparison to a seat + bag + food + movies fare).

The only benefit would be in getting points to my velocity account. Given her age she is highly unlikely to ever get enough to transfer so that is probably a wasted idea. Best make it as cost effective as possible. Thanks guys

Good news - even if your mum flies on NZ codes, she will still earn Velocity points for the trip. You can enter a Velocity number into the NZ site when you do the booking.

You can do a 'transfer chain' to recover her points - ie transfer 5,000 points to her account, and the transfer 5,000 + x pts back to yourself.
