Great trip report Jess We are off to The Lakes for one week and then Florence for the other week in late June have been to Florence before but not sure if we made the most of it so hoping to do and see a lot more this trip. Currently looking for a self catering Apartment in both places

Amazing photos Jess
Thank you.

We are using MSN apartments in Florence and it was booked with my TA, who used expedia. I am not sure that you would get a 10 bed apartment for 2 though!

Just on that, the cost for 7 nights was about A$1000. There is a sign in the apartment giving the list price as €2300 per week. Quite the saving!

Really enjoying your trip report and love the photos!

We stayed in a B&B right in the heart of Florence, had the smallest bathroom I have ever seen, but great location, loved the gelati. We went to the top of the Basilica, which was fabulous and the tower some very narrow steps but views spectacular.
We flew Easyjet from Paris to Pisa on our way to Cinque Terre, Pisa is a very understated airport. With a train literally waiting for you at the airport, a great little airport.

Thank you.

Thanks Jess...I have a contact too for a 2 bed apartment just outside of the city with about a ten minute walk in that might be OK..I think that is 1000 Euros too for the week so pricing seems OK. Previously for ayone interested we had a B & B which was great value opposite the Duomo just about I think called Tourist House Gilberti Bed and Breakfast Firenze Centro | Pensione Firenze vicino Duomo | B&B a Firenze Centro storico | Tourist House Ghiberti
This time we have our daughter from the UK with us so think an apartment style where we can do day trips via train would be better. Hoping to get to Cinque Terra via train from Florence too....This weekend is the planning weekend to work out all the details...as flying into London in June , then Italy then onto Washington, Nashville and LA before heading home so will be asking lots of questions I am sure.

Some former Victorians run a business letting out apartments in Lucca which might be a good alternative:

No visit to the Uffizi in Florence? I know galleries are not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought the Uffizi was only slightly behind the Louvre.

As for Switzerland, most countries would settle for one or two beautiful valleys with a pristine lake surrounded by majestic, snow-capped mountains. Switzerland has hundreds. It was the most beautiful country I've seen by a fair margin. We were warned about the cost, but found ways of getting by without spending significantly more than other places in Europe.

Pisa left us with the same feeling. TBH it's the only place in Italy that I would avoid visiting again.

The wife and i agreed, after visiting Pisa, Florence and Lucca in July '13. We were passing through Pisa to the cinque Terre and thought we should stop, but wont be hurrying back. Can't understand a place with only 1 tourist attraction that cant even be bothered to put a sign up at the tower telling you to buy tickets from a building the other side of the square and to leave all bags in a luggage locker. While waiting in line at least 30 people asked where to buy tickets (plus they all had bags with them) only to get tickets, wait in line, and then get told they need to leave bags in another building. Almost felt like creating a sign myself...Crazy.

When I did Pisa it was hop off the bus, take a handful of photos, then hop back on the bus and get moving. Not much else to do around there...

Almost did the same, hopped off the train, took some pictures, hopped back on a train.

Apart from dodging the most persistent hawkers this side of the Colosseum..........;)
