I tried Fly Ahead for the first time today on VA. I originally booked the cheapest Elevate fare but only Freedom fares were available when I made the request. However, within two minutes of approaching the SYD lounge service desk, I had my new boarding pass and I was away.

A very painless experience overall, particularly when compared to recent 'reports' from the 'other side'.

The main reason I have not generally used Fly Ahead in the past is seating. If the flights are busy, the chances of getting a good extra legroom seat when changing flights at the last minute could be poor. This may not be much of an issue on short East Coast flights but it certainly matters on Transcon flights in Y.

With YX however, the chances of getting a good extra legroom seat when using Fly Ahead is far better. Today, I was able to snag a good YX seat (with a shadow) six hours from departure on a 73H flight that ended up with only four empty seats (all YX middle seats). The flight before was a similar situation with respect to seating.

So Fly Ahead is a good perk in isolation, but it becomes an excellent perk when combined with YX. It was like I booked the flight I travelled on months ago...
