Fly Qantas and pay extra for a down-grade!

Being asked to pay to move your flight forward after a Qantas cancellation is outrageous, especially when it involves a downgrade. I would absolutely be submitting a complaint to Qantas customer care on the basis of that treatment.

Yes, usually when IRROPS happens and/or there's a flight cancellation, on revenue fares people are moved without penalty, whatever fare buckets available. Another one notched down to call centre incompetence?

Boarding is both late and chaotic, with no policing of the priority lane. It becomes apparent that the flight is full as Qantas has ‘combined’ two flights into one. Several passengers have US sized cabin luggage which then needs to be checked in, adding to delays. As a result total boarding time takes over 25 minutes.
When boarding is delayed, the 'priority' lane is often slower than the normal Y lane.

Many years ago I had a return booking on A3 ATH-SKG-ATH.

Knowing my luck both flights were cancelled. Arrived at the airport early for both flights. Vacant seats on earlier flights but there was no way they would let me fly earlier as my ticket did not allow changes. What do you mean changes? You've cancelled my flight.

Put on later flight each time and from memory both later flights were delayed. The only reason they cancelled the flights was to consolidate flights. Awful way to treat customers.

we accept a downgrade to economy and pay an additional $193.57

I dont understand this part …………

I don’t understand that either, when our Qantas flight was cancelled we got put on another flight at no cost, and that did not involve a change of class.

OK, update on this trip.
Absolutely zero response from Qantas to email/posted letter and fax.
After 6 weeks lodged a claim with the Small Claims Court in NSW (NCAT).
Surprise, surprise - suddenly was called by Qantas 2 days later wanting to talk compensation.
Was offered full refund damaged case, NCAT application fees and only 50% of original J class fare. After some discussion finally was awarded the actual difference between J and Y class fares on the day. Monies arrived into my account 2 days later.
Needless to say, very much a token apology and no interest at all in addressing underlying issues.
If it would help others progress refunds, happy to supply Qantas ASIC listing for free (this is required for the NCAT application and cost $9-00).
Have just book a Virgin flight, so will be giving them a go for the first time ever this month. This is how you lose loyal customers....
