Flybuys Targeted Bonus Promotions

If you intend to take it up, let's see what you get thereafter.

I got the four week one 6 weeks ago and max I've spent each week was $69.

After fulfilling the offer, I had:
$100 for 2000 points 3 days later (didn't take up)
$110 for 4400 points 3 days later (took this up)
$110 for 2000 points 3 days later (not taking up).
NEVER, never spend more than $1 over the min spend required.

As you get close to the $$ then manage it to be as close to the min amount. Not a competition but better half has got the exact amount (including weighed F&V) 6 confirmed times vs only 4 by me :(

If you don't have others in household with FB account, then put the other amount through as a separate order without using FBs. Missing out on a few points makes a big difference in future offers trying to get you to increase your spend.

Best approach though is not to get onto that treadmill.

Yeah I try to spend as close to the min amount too and even weigh the F & V, but sometimes, when I see something I want to buy and it's on special, I couldn't be bothered putting it on another account if it's slightly over. The closest I got (for WR) was 5 cents over.

I have been screwed before and ended up just under and had to buy a pack of gum to get me over at the self-checkout. Sometimes it's my own fault for reading the wrong price or miscalculated the price of weighed items. Other times, it's a cheaper price charged at the checkout compared to the shelf price and it's usually F & V.

This weekend, I'll buy as little as possible from either Coles or Woolies as there's very little love from them this week and might just use up some of my backup supplies in the freezer.

Never a $1 over, that seems more effort than it's worth, I just stick to under $10 over the minimum.

Received the interesting offer below, ~20% so I'll hit it up.

Haven't had a sub $100 4weeker in long while. Thanks FB, you can further track my spending!

@kyle, if COL & Woolies give poor offers, do a couple shops at Aldi, Foodworks or IGA. We did that, kept clear of both & has seemed to work.

Nope. You have no idea of the difference it makes to future offers.

Don't think I've set foot in any of those three since... ummm... 2019... Aldi is only for those fun special buys for me. The last purchase there could have been the vegie garden. The prices at the local IGA are like 10-20% more than Coles/Woolies, so if there are no good offers on any account, I will just use the least used account.

really, so your telling me if I go 50c over or $8 over the minimum.....what kind of difference will that make to future offers??

I find such a small margin.... marginal.

I know the importance of data to these big corps & way they use it for offers & loyalty etc, but really I'd be fascinated to know the extend of a few goldies over.

I'm trying to spot my pattern. So I was surprised I got another 20% off so soon after the 4 week one, even though the spend has gone up from $60 to $110. But with a chest freezer in the garage, and if I'm buying meat, it's easy to reach $110, even with just the two of us. Those Coles Finest 100-day scotch fillet are really good. I use it in stir fry (which my friends call a waste for using such a cut) as well as regular steak.

Or alternatively, shop at Coles/Woolies but don't scan your rewards card. Whilst I'd like to shop at Aldi, they don't seem to have the food I predominantly buy (e.g. ready made meals) never mind the draconian policies when it comes to using credit cards. As for the IGA there's one near me and from what I hear they carry a variety of ready made meals so that might be the best option, particularly if TPIR.

Technically we don't know either way what impact spending behaviours have on how Coles targets Flybuys offers. What we really need is a database of spending behaviours versus offers then we could maybe do some sort of regression to determine the optimal shopping strategy for bonus offers.

I will neither promote nor condone the use of multiple rewards accounts to game the system. I haven't figured out a strategy for IGA yet, my understanding is there's no rewards program there, my nearest IGA is the one at Turramurra, NSW. One potential concern I have is there doesn't appear to be any click and collect option like Coles or Woolies meaning I'd have to shop in-store which given the current situation regarding you know what in Greater Sydney may not be the wisest option despite me being double vaxxed with Astra.

It is the exact same approach as credit card companies (where do you think the FB people came from?) use to convert payers to revolvers.

The CC companies offer you increased credit limits at the time of year (if you haven't ticked not to offer credit increases) just prior to when your weekly spending pattern diverges by more than X%.

They keep increasing the limit until it gets you to the point where you can no longer pay off your monthly bill in full & start paying interest.

FB uses the same approach, so if on say a $50 hurdle, then spending $9 over the limit = 18%, so chances are the next offer may be for $70 hurdle (same % increase again rounded up to nearest $10 multiple).

A spend of $1 over = 2% which doesn't meet the round-up hurdle. Haven't gamed the system for a few years to find out the triggers but typically seemed to be $6 on $50 spend on just one week guaranteed the next offer would be for $60, and that would stick for 5 months of offers.

Worse still though, going back a few years now was buying a lot of the $100 prepaid MCs before they tightened up on the ofer T&Cs. Killed offers on the one account for over two years. But did generate 1 F return to Europe :D

The offers with spend $X for 4 weeks and if $10/week on Coles brand for extra 1,000 points/week are clever.

Coles makes many times the margin on Coles branded products & you end up buying more individual products - sold you have to add another item. After the 4th week - they hope your loyalty/habit to the branded version is broken. That way going forward their earnings may have increased 3 to 5 fold for those Coles brands.

It's not that long ago that I completed that Flybuys survey and they are already implementing one of the potential offers in there.

I've found if you overspend the $ target by more than 5, then it goes up.

A few years back we did a 'Big Data' exercise in this thread on working out trigger points for offers - with people keeping track of their spending, offers and reporting them both.

In the interests of keeping things anonymous from Big Brother, may I suggest that the cents component of spending be altered, say of you spend $50.28, then report it (here) as $50.19, then if the following week was $50.77, report it as $50.83 (say).

Only report the weekly amounts when the next offers roll in.

So say you've got a current offer (for those so fortunate) of $50/wk for 10k points - keep track of your weekly spends and in 6 weeks time (as typically 4 wk offers have a 10 day first week - then report as:

$50 spend 4 wks, 10k, $50.19, $50.83, $50.15, $51.08 (poor effort!), with what new offers are.

Or not.

Equally if you're getting offers with too high spends then if you keep track of your spends while not taking up offers until the offer hurdle drops...

So interesting Offer buy two products (Panadol and a water) for 200 points. I guess the products go together.

Okay offer to pile on top of the 10,000 bonus points for spending $100/week in store (will need to stock up on some items I suppose):

Did not take up offer of $60 spend over 4 wks etc.

This week offered 2,400 points for $60, 2,800 for $70, 3,200 for $80 one-off spends - despite all being offered the $60 4-wk spend.

Data, data, data.
