Flying cheap / in higher classes - sounds like too much work.

I'm not sure if I would agree with that. I'd take QF F over CX J any day.

While I think the comment was a tad tongue in cheek, QF F has far better champagne (until it runs out, but that's a separate discussion) IMO and wins based on that ;)

Any* F is better than any J.

I flew CX and QR J which are considered among the world's best and yea they are fine but F will almost always be a step up in service, comfort and privacy.

* Excluding some second grade airlines which allow their pilots to smoke and serve $5 "champagne" in F.

Even UA?

Of course, QR was trying to make a big song and dance about their new J being a Super Business Class which would beat out much (or all) of the First Class fitouts, et voila the patented QSuite.

Apart from serving pre-departure champagne in a plastic cup, yes. Polaris cabins look promising tho.

QR super J is an interesting concept and definitely very photogenic, it look stunning BUT I have my doubts about it. It will encourage more families traveling together to book J and If a solo traveler is sitting in one of the window seats next to a noisy family sitting in the middle, even the doors which don't go floor to ceiling won't help much blocking the noise.

If by family you mean a family travelling with kids I would not worry about that as the kids will be busy playing electronic games, watching videos, listening to music and doing their best to ignore their siblings and parents.

16 years ago I was taking a redemption flight for 5 on SQ booked via Ansett (who went into liquidation two weeks after I redeemed. phew!!!!) with my then 10, 8 and 5 year old daughters on a 10 week backpacking trip in the Middle East (the Xmas after 9/11 as it turned out!) and my wife and I were somewhat dreading the long 3 sector flight there after previous long flights where we had to entertain our kids. However that was the first flight we took where SQ had installed the nintendo games and so despite the long flights we hardly heard a peep out of them. Mind you we did not have a nintendo at home then and so all 3 girls thought they were in nirvana when Mum and dad happily let them play non-stop. The advent of the IVRs with individual programming and games is probably one of the biggest boons for parents on flights, and I am sure for fellow passengers too as kids these days I am sure are way quieter than there were a few decades back.

Any story from that trip? Backpacking in the Middle East is one thing, but just after 9/11 would (I imagine) have thrown a whole new concern into the mix. How did it all go?

Actually I wasn't thinking specifically about kids being the noisy ones. A layout of two seats facing each other is a recipe for loud conversations, either between members of one family or friends traveling together.

I haven't read any reports from Super J yet and hopefully they will be positive as the cabin looks great.
