Qantas pilots have long-argued that the best way forward for Qantas is to take the German approach to operating in a high-cost environment: focus on offering a premium product where people are getting superior quality for the extra amount they pay. Instead, Qantas management have opted for a pre-GFC, American-style approach – racing to the bottom on costs and deploying complex, high-wire financial manoeuvres.

It's tough to see how tying a huge part of national infrastructure to the continued fortunes of a Middle Eastern government-owned airline is anything other than a gamble.

Yet Mr Joyce is in the captain's seat, and we have no choice but to take his word that it's a good one.

Why a new thread????

The German approach aint working for LH.
Not helped by Australian plane depreciation policies....

And frankly, how can you out-premium Singapore, Cathay, Emirates, Qatar etc.

A gamble.
A. Qantas is not national infrastructure - its a publicly listed company.
B. Dubai is a stopover, no different to Singapore, except Qantas is flying to a hub where the operator is willing to work with it....

Why a new thread????

Its a published opinion piece from a pilots union perspective that could just as easily be sitting under the industrial action subcategory, we live in interesting times!

BTW, I would beg to differ on the national infrastructure considerably, who ships ALL of our post around when it comes to overnight or air services, and most of the overnight freight market as well?

Best way to help QF imo would be for the government to ensure QF is on a level playing field by exempting its international operations from taxes or making the aircraft depreciation regime more competitive with other nations. But we all know this will never happen.

Flying Kangaroo leaps into a shakey alliance

Re: Flying Kangaroo leaps into a shakey alliance

German Approach? As German that makes me laughing. LH is offering a below average product in all classes with very high prices. Their USP is to have direct flights from the German market. Most competitors offer better products and fares.

The reason that they still perform is a very good brand awareness of a clean, save and reliable airline, but they are struggling with that at the moment.

LH is just moving most of their short haul flight to Germanwings (quite similar to Jetsatar) for the main reason to save the much too high wages of LH-Mainline.

Same they did with Austrian Subsidiary OS: The staff was overpayed so they just moved all of the operation to the low-wage regional part (Tyrolean). The pilots could move or leave.

So, dear QF-Pilots the deal would be that Jetstar will take over all shorthaul flights. For Longhaul Flights just create a new Longhaul Airline QF-Asia and let them fly for QF. All Staff will have to accept 30% reduction in wages or leave!

I do not think that they would like that!

True! But J.B. and his Virgin Team would love it. Suddenly QF/JQ would have the 35 % share of Aus traffic, and VA 60%.
