i've been using the Wizard MC for the last few yrs to get teh free ATM withdrawls
just did a quick check on an Amex (QF) card that was billed in USD
the rate i received was 64.04 US and XE.com shows for March 8th 64.07
FXHistory showed the bank interline rate to be Average (1 days): 0.64050 High: 0.64160 Low: 0.63980
It would appear Amex at least are not double dipping. They take their 2.5% and give a pretty fair exchange rate.
I do think my citibank card will be used as little as possible since their 3.3% is getting a bit rich.
I do wish the ACCC would force all the baanks to itemise the fee, as well as display the conv rate. This would hopefully encourage people to shop aroudn and find a card with a lower fee structure. Or maybe not. inertia is hard to overcome
