Last night (Sunday) I boarded SYD-MEL DJ flight, 6.15pm departure IIRC.

Anyhow, the little beverage cart makes its way down the centre of the craft, and the FA leans over and said to me, Mr Wallace, due to your status we would like to offer you a free beverage!
Wow, how nice. I was pleasantly surprised. I was doubley surprised because due to my reduced rate of flying over the last 12 months I have dropped to Silver.

That is the sort of thing that will keep me going with Virgin.

I always get free "beverages" on QF.

I hope I get a free drink tomorrow… then again I’m planning to be in the lounge for a while soaking it up anyway :p

Good to see DJ giving a free drink to status passengers. Does it happen on all flights or is it up to the crew to remember where the status passengers are sitting?

So do I but at the rate enhancements have been happening recently this benefit may not last much longer.

Must be up to the individual as I didn't get this last Friday morning and had to paid for a coke.

Well the "free" beverages I've got have cost me about $27 extra per flight recently. Doesn't seem very free to me.

lol, I was in the lounge prior to the flight soaking up a few, and of course, there is always room for just one more. :lol:

Did you have a choice of a complimentary alcoholic beverage?

That would be up on QF since QF only gives complimentary beer and wine after 4pm on weekdays (at least in Y).

Yeah you'd have to be drinking a fair bit of free grog to make up that difference; probably much, much more than RSA would allow.

Yes, anything from the menu was permitted. I was not happy to find that they have removed scotch from the menu, and I don't care too much for bourbon.

Wow, how much a year do you have to spend to get a free beverage, $10K? Bargin.:mrgreen:

I can usually get a free one before 4pm by offering to pay with a $100 note, I'm not sure how much cash change they carry on board but it isn't always enough.

Anything except scotch, oh well, DJ still on the list for the next flight.

Does the greenie trick work on DJ? Or are DJ more savvy since they are dealing with a lot of cash at any given time?

I guess if the answer is "no, the trick won't work" but you still insist on handing over a greenie, you just might get a whole lot of shrapnel back. I mean, a lot.

+1

My last S&C on DJ :(

Here's hoping that they move to spirits in miniatures (in Y) that can BE mixed with/without whatever you want, when they launch their new business model next year. AND BRING BACK THE SCOTCH!

BUT: They are still the only major domestic airline with Sparkling Wine on all Economy flights.

True as that may be (even with the latest QF announcement), from my experience unless that sparkling wine is decent champagne, most of the time the drop will be more ghastly than its absence altogether.

Nobody has to accept more than $12 in gold and $5 in silver (from memory) as legal tender.

That was very lucky for you. I flew SYD-PER-SYD last week, my first DJ flights since my Gold status match, and I was offered nothing. In fact, when I did purchase something on the way back I had to settle for second choice as they'd run out of beer (well they'd run out of Crown, and VB is simply disgusting).

Hopefully on my SYD-BNE-SYD and SYD-MCY-SYD flights this week I'll get a little treat. I think it must depend on the FAs working the flight, as I was chatting to my brother yesterday and he flies DJ way more than me (also Velocity GOld) and he seems to get treated like royalty.. free upgrades to Prem, free drinks here and there... Glad your experience was good tho.. Of course as others have said, QF would be a free drink anyway at that time of day, and in my experience fares rarely differ much between the two..

My two cents..

Nobody has to accept more than $12 in gold and $5 in silver (from memory) as legal tender.

From the RBA, the rules for coins according to the Currency Act 1965 are as follows:

  • not exceeding 20c if 1c and/or 2c coins are offered (however, it should be noted that these coins have been withdrawn from circulation but are still legal tender);
  • not exceeding $5 if any of 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c coins are offered;
  • not exceeding 10 times the face value if coins in the range 50c to $10 inclusive are offered; and
  • to any value if coins of value greater than $10 are offered
$5 applies if any silver is offerred. 10 times the face value (i.e. 10 coins) if in Gold.

Perhaps you should keep one of the $200 face value Gold Koalas rather than a greenie - less chance of change for that one....:p
