The sheer number of loopholes previous posters have already identified suggest 2 things.
1. If this is actually introduced, this thread would have a field day coming up with even more ways to exploit it;
2. which means that the greatest impact this will have is on the public servants who will have to develop the procedures to monitor and risk-manage the loopholes that've already been identified!
;)

So not only will it create more money in the economy, but also more jobs ;)

Agreed seems ridiculous. As a non-resident I'm thinking there are many ways of getting free flights .... wonder if fees I pay on letting and maintaining my property in Australia count? Or my parents phone bills .... etc etc...

If going down this path of subsidising tourists, why not give 20% rebates on locally booked accommodation and expenses with licenced travel providers to anyone who stays longer than 14 days. To be claimed on at TRC centres upon departure.... or something like this. Rather than subsidising fin many instances) foreign airlines!

Well I get it.We avoid the effects of a crisis caused by too much debt by going even further into debt. Now we want to give money away to non residents as well as the poor, pensioners(but not those unemployed),first home buyers and the list goes on.
Now Kevin I have always wanted a boat.Never owned one so I would be a first boat owner.I promise faithfully to buy a genuine Australian made boat-scouts honour(and i was never one of those either).
So how about it Kevin-a FBOG-will make me very happy. At least $14000 should do it.

I thought you wanted a boat, not a dinghy?
Not greedy, just a little to defray the cost!
Since my post though mrsdrron said that she would prefer a jewellery buyers grant-probably a lot more costly though!

Waste of money, what with scam artist aussies [its the convict heritage],and our more intelligent asian brothers, the plan will be a paradise for perks.

Just another "stimulus package" from this Government that we mugs will have to end up paying for.

If a tourist spends $ 5,000 whoopee !!! how much of that goes back to the Government in tax ???

Not enough to pay the air fare.

Brilliant.. no more boat people risking their lives in leaky boats they will all fly here ( another beer sir ???) and then disappear.

Maybe we could give them all $ 900 as they file off the plane to spend too ??

We were contacted by the Director (Innovation) for Independent Tourism Holdings who originally proposed the Stimulus/Rescue proposal "The Mayday Project" for the Australian Tourism/Aviation sector.

They have now released the formal industry working paper which explains the proposal in detail, and requested that we publish this report in full on AFF.

You can find the full report at: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/mayday_project.pdf
