Hyatt have added some new benefits for elites, the most useful of which is free internet for platinums and diamonds.

With decent monthly 3G wireless data plans down to under $50/ mth, I think hotels internet earnings will be dropping through the floor, particularly for road warriors.

My office has just bought a number of the new Telstra Turbo21 USB sticks for this purpose exactly - couple of uses a month and they pay for themselves.

Domestically, free internet access at a hotel is no big deal for me as I can access the VF network via a bluetooth connection between my laptop and mobile phone (part of monthly plan) - plan came unstuck, however, in Tas where there is no 3G network:shock:, and the connnection was extremely slow!!

Overseas, it is a different matter, and free hotel internet access (in partic. to use Skype to call home, and make other landline calls at reasonable rates) is a God send!

Yeah, free internet does come in handy.

Purchased a new laptop in Hong Kong and needed to 'customise' it for my needs by downloading updates, applications, service packs etc.

Luckily the hotel had free Internet, otherwise I'd hate to think what I would have paid. In some Australian hotels, that would have cost me > $500!

Free Internet has been available at Hyatt hotels and resorts for some years if you stay in Regency Club or Grand Club class rooms. The rooms are the same but include breakfast, evening drinks and canapes, one free hour of boardroom or meeting room usage, private lounge with all day tea, coffee etc, some dry cleaning thrown in and, did I mention? Free internet in the club lounge or your room.

You may think this is ho hum in Australia, but for example in China, those evening canapes can substitute for dinner and in some hotels they will cook your breakfast to order.

Further, I have stayed in government owned hotels in China where they have blocked my internet access from my private network on my mobile phone and Skype is banned.

For me, it's a useful add on!

Hotels used to love the revenue from the hotel telephone systems. We'd all hit our hotel rooms using the hotel phone to ring Head Office, tomorrow's appointments, colleagues, call home to the wife and kids. Then along came dial-up modems,even better a long call to the data centre. Then the hotels worked out how to even bill for 'free' calls our modems were making to 1800 numbers.
