Free upgrades and status

Just one OPUP for me as a gold on a flexi. ROK-BNE without J food. Plane was chockers and I flew ahead with checked-in luggage.

In one full year of WP and then SG before that, got upgraded once.

Got beeped at the gate and got an op-up from Saver to J for myself as WP + non-status partner flying SYD-ADL on the morning at the start of a long weekend. No reason given, but I presume overbooking. Flight looked full!

Flying AUH-BNE by myself on EY (but booked VA) was beeped at the final gate and told that they'd overbooked and gave me a J boarding pass. I got the meal and everything as well. Pretty sure I had booked a saver fare, and I hadn't quite reached Silver status at this stage. I think it was because my connecting flight was late so I was one of the last people to board, and I was travelling by myself. But who knows! I'm not complaining when I got to spend 14hrs with a flat bed and champagne!

Was SG for about 2 years, WP for a year, then back to SG ever since - never had a free op-up, either domestic or international.

Wife when she was WP flying Y+ from SYD-LAX upgraded to J. This is her only upgrade. (she is now PS)

Me (WP) flying SYD-AUH with VA in Y+ upgraded at checkin to J and on same trip upgraded at gate from EY Y to J AUH-DUS.
Also 3 times prior upgraded Y to J from AUH-FRA with EY. Have had the odd upgrade domestically but can't remember details.

No Op Ups on VA since joining. However, I cannot recall ever being on a completely full VA flight where I was travelling in Y.

How much have you flown EY as VA WP while getting those 4 upgrades? I'd consider flying them more if the chance of op-ups are reasonable.

Not often... only once per year and maybe twice per year in one of those years. I use to go to Germany once a year for work. Retired now so haven't flown with them for a while. (once last year but short flight) I think I got the upgrades because I had a SYD-AUH Y+ ticket in combination with my WP.
