Even with that it is better to manually type the link rather than click through as sometimes an underlying link is not what is displayed.

Firefox will display the actual link address in the bottom area of the window when you move the mouse over the link.

I always check first.

I think the important factor is context. If I got the email, with no AA account, the scam alarm would go off. But scams try to target as many people as possible and this one is too tailored to a very small group of people, most of whom would be more savvy than the average bear.

If the OP had just tried to purchase miles, then I would see no reason to not trust the site. Also- PF should report that site to whoever is calling it a phishing site so they can look into it and stop scaring others if necessary!
