I am a freshly minted PS. Apparently I now get a free QP Pass - does anyone know how long this takes, as I am on the red-eye this weekend and would love to spend a few hours in the QP before the awful flight..

In my experience it takes 2-3 weeks to get your welcome kit. The pass would be in that.

My experience has been anywhere between 2-4 weeks so I don't like your chances.

Of course this is all depending on how long ago you made PS. If you made it a couple of weeks ago then you maybe in luck.

The Qantas Silver kit arrived within 2 weeks when I first qualified for Silver and then attained it again the year after.

does anyone here think it is worth chasing about 40 or 50 SC's in a run to get to Silver. with current bookings, that is what i will be short of attaining PS in my membership year which expires 31/7.

Am already QC member for another 12 months on corp rates, and while obviously you don't get membership at this level, i am getting a graduate position with one of the big 4 which i am hoping will provide a bit more travel next year which might help me retain it. only real benefit i see is the 25% bonus points and a free pass for a family member or mate.

if it is worth it, what suggestions do the more experienced members have for the cheapest way to attain it ex CBR.

any help greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how the pricing works in economy, but a few times I've flown CBR-SYD-BNE return in business as a means of obtaining SCs (without taking convoluted MRs across the country).

If you use the Qantas website to book a CBR-BNE return trip but scroll down the list to avoid the direct flights, I've often found that to fly via SYD is about the same price as flying direct. A CBR-SYD-BNE-SYD-CBR trip in business earns 160 SCs (40 per sector) and makes for a nice weekend break - you could probably do the same trip in full-fare economy and earn 80 SCs.

The last time I did this it almost came unstuck in CBR when the CBR-SYD flight was delayed and the very kind Qantas Club staff changed my booking to the direct flight instead... It was a nice gesture but would have left me 30SCs short of renewing Gold that year so I chose to wait it out in the lounge.

You'll get 1 pass you can give to a mate, but if they are travelling with you then you can get them into the lounge anyway. If your mate is in CBR, then is the lounge really worth it? Just stay at home and drink a couple of beers there -that's probaly $10 worth. It's not as if you need to check in really early in CBR (in case there are huge queues) nor is the gate area a zoo like some other airports :-)

Additionally the 25% bonus is only worthwhile on long routes. Most domestic routes are under 800 miles, so you'd only get the 1000 point credit anyway.

To be honest, I wouldn't pay extra to get silver. You are looking at a few hundred dollars, for minimal return IMHO.

You said you wanted to get in there a few hours before the Red-eye... To my knowledge isnt it only open an hour before the first flight of the day? Or are we talking late at night?

Not really worth spending any extra money to get Silver status if you aleady have QC membership even taking into consideration the 25% bonus FF points for Silver status unless you plan to do lots of medium to long haul travel to take advantage of the bonus.

Not sure.. red-eye leaves at 12.15am sat..

In this case it would be late at night as a red-eye generally refers to an overnight flight.

PER is open all day.
PER closes after the last departure of the night and re-opens at 4:30am.

OT but...
the nice qantas staff often offer to put mum on the direct flight BNE to ADL. She asks if she'll still get 25 SC and 2000 points. Of course, they say no, and so she doesn't fly direct.

There are 24 hours in a day. Therefore the PER Qantas Lounge is not open all day. ;)

That is a earth astronomical day correct. But humans usually use "day" as "awake portion" of the astronomical day.
