I'm appalled that you could suggest such a thing @serfty! They usually don't bother trying to squeeze in anything, they just print off the fuel bill with a figure that springs to mind!

Once rented a car in NYC from Avis.Switched on and the fuel gauge said 25 miles until empty.So back to the office and they said just return empty.Got it in writing.
Boy am I a genius when it comes to estimating fuel consumption.When returned to JFK the gauge said 2 miles until empty.

I don’t hire from thieves and I always fill up within 5 kms of the car return and keep the receipt in my pocket for the last fuel purchase. We still use Argus trawler site and I pick a top rated vehicle. Toyota ,Kia and Nissan have been my most recent hires and they were all ok.

It's hard to tell from some of the fuel gauges these days just how full a tank is. Some of the electronic gauges say the tank is full for quite a few kms....

No, but you can tell when the pump clicks off a number of times. That's the way I used to fill up as I didn't want the issue of the fuel con. It also often didn't stop them billing me and it's meant they've lost $,ooo's from me, which now goes to Uber drivers and also means I don't have the hassle of dropping into a fuel station anymore! (Although admittedly I had one young Indian Uber driver last week where I was very tempted to ask him to drop into a service station ... so I could buy him a cake of soap!)

Maybe strap 'im to the bonnet and take the car though the car wash ...

... seriously though, that one of the reasons I need to be dragged kicking and screaming into a cab/uber/lyft/etc.

Just received an $8 dollar charge from Hertz Nelson NZ , trying to find out what its for is like pulling teeth no one is opening their mouth.
Took it back full and clean. Normally use Enterprise and never had any problems. Sorry Hertz I don't think I'll back.

I've used Argus many times and have found their back-up service excellent. When a Spanish rental company tried the fuel con on me a couple of years ago, I provided Argus my receipt for filling up 1km from their depot and Argus took it from there; I got my money back in a couple of days.

I thought there was also an inconvenience fee .... IIRC ~ $26 fee + fuel

I've had one issue with Hertz where I returned it with a full tank (receipt provided) and was charged for a full tank as well. Took my bank inititating a charge back before Hertz finally refunded it (had photos of odometer and fuel guage to back up my claim as well). Whats worse is they only provided me with half a tank to start with.

I'm renting cars on a weekly basis at the moment and seeing varying degrees. Sometimes the needle doesn't go up over F (or 1) if it's just been filled up for a few minutes, but that's not always the case. I picked up a car last week and it was a bit below the 1; however on me filling it up last night it was past the 1 so definitely not given to me with a full tank. It's only a few £ in reality so not worth fighting, but frustrating none-the-less. I always take a photo of the fuel gauge indicator also in case of any issue and keep fuel receipts.

I personally rent from Hertz (due to Pres. Circle status and cushy CDP code) but I also know an Avis outlet and how the Avis system works.
When checking out, there is a fuel out code,
y/Gx. x = integer of /8th of how full the tank is, so it can either be 7/8th full or full (or less). This value is printed on the contract.
When it's checked in, the 'buy fuel= ?' field requires a similar response but it alone doesn't calculate the additional charge.
The agent needs to calculate this manually and add it in at a separate field.

I mention this just in case any sites try and say 'the system calculates a min of 1/4 of a tank $3.50/l" this is B.S. The site needs to keep the purchase receipt as the refuel gets charged to a BP fleet account, and then the litres * 3.50 is added to the booking.
