Further Qantas Status Extension?

I am feeling rather foolish as I was procrastinating over booking my token trip to retain status. Havnt done it and now I wondered if there will be any capacity to fly before end of Oct 2021 for me .
Also wondering if purchasing another year of status might be offered ? I have a bucketload of points. Sydney based here

I can imagine the US majors may again have discounted status goals, but probably not as much as this year. Maybe similiar with the hotel chains but hard to know. With many other parts of the world opening up in one way or another (* current Delta spread may change things) most other places have far more normal(ish) opportunities - or at least are getting more and more in their areas (eg: within Europe, USA etc) so it may not be quite as carte blanche as it may seem.

I think the big issue is the business travel cash cow, which is still highly restrictive in many regions by company policy, nevermind government restrictions, and where a significant chunk of the high status flyers get all or a plurality of SC. (Particularly that gold to just-scrape-into-platinum bracket) Same for the long haul J flyers, even in relatively open countries, they aren't racking up those for the most part, bar the miniscule handful of people who do/can take yippie trip status runs.
This flows into the hotel industry directly, especially outside of tourist destinations (Disneyland & Hawaii, Mediterranean tourist spots etc)
So long term there will probably also have to be a broader review and analysis of the business travel market and how reward/loyalty schemes target them, as there will be some permanent hangover as well, with VTC and collaboration tools taking a chunk of the pie in perpetuity, particularly for personnel outside of senior leadership and upper middle management.

That is a very fair point re Business Travel and I agree.

I had read an article somewhere recently suggesting there was a "quick" resurgence of business travel expected once things settled covid-wise (so like 2028?) as the alure of zoom and the like was well and truly lost to many it seems and a desire to "go there in person" is apparently strong. Who knows if that is reality or not but I can certainly understand it.

but yeah I guess unlikely in the next six-twelve months. Well I for one would be happy with extended status with some hotels and the like. we'll see.

I think Zoom and other VTC platforms are the new PowerPoint: Everyone hates them, thinks they're inefficient, painful and encourage bad habits in operations and management, but we're stuck with them. The cost cutting is simply too great and tangible, versus the less eaily quantifiable downsides.
At the end of the day, it's kind of like the boiling frog we've seen in cutting both airline service and across a range of industries for years. ("do they need 32" pitch? Make it 31"...then 30", then 29"... Or cramming that tenth seat abreast into 777 Y cabins) all the while stratifying the premium market with both vastly better service and higher costs (it was not that long ago long haul J was only about twice the cost of Y). So I think there will be a trend at least in part for travel to be more of a senior management thing, while the plebs make do with emails, Dropbox, VTCs etc.
(And his will only be exacerbated by companies increasingly trying to greenwash cost cutting by lavishing PR on emissions reductions)

My expectation is that they will just reduce the hurdles for status, much as many hotel chains have done this year (one way or the other). They will be making you do something for the extension....

From memory, I thought the ask was to BOOK a flight before Dec 2021 ... not necessarily FLY ..

As others have noted, the requirement is to book a new flight between 23 November and the end of your status year.

And as I noted on another thread, the T&Cs do include the following statement:

If the booking is cancelled, will my status still be extended?

We will extend your status if you’ve made a booking in line with the requirements and Qantas cancels the flight you’ve booked.

If you cancel the booking, you will need to make a new eligible booking before your status end date to qualify for the 12 month extension. (emphasis added.)

However, the T&Cs are silent on what happens if your status has already been extended before you cancel the booking.

I agree with other comments that it is highly unlikely that QF will cancel the status extention, once it has been extended.

Why not just book a couple of flights for dates after your status end date (31 July) and before the end of the year? Your status will be extended. If QF cancel one of those flights, your status will stick as per the policy outlined in the FAQs above. Even if QF don't cancel any of them (and you end up cancelling all of them), it is unlikely that QF will reverse the extention.

I note that my +1 had her status extended at the end of March on the basis of booking a flight in accordance with the rules. She hadn't taken any flights between 23 Nov and the end of March.

This must have been posted on the Qantas web site in 2020. Luckily I had some flights to OZ on Qantas before the current lockdown. I'll see what happens at the end of November when my current status expires.

Interesting to see that Delta are extending status another year. An interesting part of that is that those who have earned status this year will have priority over extended status earners for things like upgrades. That's smart and seems quite fair to those who have put their bums in seats. Different situation here of course given the restrictions and all being far more than in the US, but it is an interesting idea.

Would you be able to use a VPN with the terminal in Australia?

I'm pretty sure you can. My son lives OS and has used a VPN for a lot of things that require you to "be in Australia". it would be worth a try anyway. Nothing much to lose if it doesn't work.

You could still book something now, even using FF points for a Classic award will count, and then if they cancel, no worries. if you cancel, there seems to be a strong view here on AFF based on experiences that the extensions are not actually cancelled, even though the T&C say that it can be.

Seems a little unfair for overseas members to be gifted status again. They can't contribute to QF revenue but are free to use their oneworld status perks anywhere in the world at QF's expense. All while most local members are in lockdown.

If anything, overseas members would be contributing more revenue to QF as the airline partners pay QF for the QF points awarded for travel.
