General attitude towards lounge service staff

Hey Cossie, what has this to do with the thread, did you post by mistake ?

Sorry, post deleted, it was actually in reference to people legitimately testing positive as in Harvyk's post #53, however I neglected to "Reply With Quote".

Certainly pleasant friendly engagement with genuine interest is a nice 'ice breaker"... especially as a regular guest :D

It is great to have the service staff remember you and your drink order.

And it is good to see a familiar face greet you with a smile. "How was your day?". "How was your week?". "See you next week!".

Do you think people are ruder or more carefree with their manners when getting something for nothing? I mean with the baristas or the bar. When you're handing money over is and getting your drink is often when the pleasantries are exchanged. Perhaps being a one-way exchange some people leave their manners in their wallet?

I make an extra special effort to thank for a free service as there's no chance they will get a tip (US excluded).

I always ensure I thank the lounge staff from the bar staff to the cleaners etc without fail, however tonight in the VA Melbourne lounge out of 14 from me i have received a total of 3 replies!!!! It is a 2 way street and have thanked some of these a number of times with nothing.

It happens even at my little boys daycare I hold the door open for mums and kids even when they are some distance away the response goes from thank you so much your wonderful to nothing just walk past. I now have a 3 strikes rule if the same one does it 3 times without any thanks then the door will shut on them. There is no place for being rude and ungrateful and I for one wont tolerate it.

Well said OP. I'm like others here, it's just the way I was brought up and requires so little effort. In fact, I would go so far as to say it takes more effort to ignore the staff.

Would love to see the look on their faces when you do that! I'm guessing these are the people who never hold the door open for anyone.

Yes your right, they never hold the door open for anyone and treat the daycare staff with total disrespect, anyway I believe in Karma. And yes its easier to be polite and kind.

I used to work with a female like that. She walked around the office like she owned the place (she wasn't senior) and never even so much as acknowledged you when you held open a door. After a while I took to closing them deliberately, although not so they hit her.

Having just completed my first chocolate box drop on check in, lounge and FA staff, I can say it was met with overwhelming surprise and thanks.

they say sociopaths are over-represented in management - they may also be tired and in an unfamiliar environment most don't go out of their way to communicate with strangers.

having worked as a waiter in a number of restaurants, I always notice the service and usually engage them in a friendly conversation and show appreciation for their efforts, which often results in them bringing me special treats or first-choice of fresh supplies !

you catch more flies with honey than vinegar ...

It is amazing how rude so many are - have found this to be true in all levels of lounges. Perhaps getting into the lounge is the highlight of their poor suburban lives so for once they can pretend they are important. Can always tell the newbies as they are generally the worse; particular in J and F lounges.

Just to add my bit here, I like to think I always thank the lounge staff and others like the GCC staff.

The one GCC that I have to check myself is HH. It's almost a game now, and I truly have to bite my tongue it stop a laugh when it happens. HH must have drilled their GCC staff to always reply to a given thank-you, with "You're welcome". I seem to have a habit (good or bad) of acknowledging something by saying thank-you. So a conversation with HH often runs like this....

HH - Good morning, how may I help you?
SI - Good morning, I'd like to check availability in XYZ
HH - Hold on a minute sir, and I'll bring it up
SI - Thank you
HH - Oh, you're welcome, you did say 2 guests, is that right
SI - Yes thanks
HH - Ok good....Oh you're welcome, was that for the two nights
SI - Yes it is thanks
HH - Oh you're welcome, I've just booked the king guest for you is that OK
SI - yes that's fine thank you
HH - You're welcome, will there be anything else today?
SI - No that's it for today thank you.
HH - Oh you're welcome!

Try it next time, it's an absolute laugh..........

I noticed myself saying 'thank you' , but without making eye contact. I've reformed and now, as I say it, I look at the person and smile. If I've been helped I usually add 'thanks, I appreciate it'. Courtesy costs nothing. Courtesy is the oil that lubricates life!

I recall checking into a hotel in NYC years ago, with my SIL who's inclined to be 'tetchy' (being very polite here). She soon got busy giving the woman a spray. We were pleasant and chatty with our attendant; gee guess who got the freshly updated and very spiffy room, and guess who got the room next to the lift....sometimes the karma bus comes along just when you need a lift!

Gifted Air NZ crew a couple of boxes of Lindt chocolate today. The crew manager came over to thank me and a FA told me it's a first in 20yrs for him.

This was the same poor FA that had to glove up because another pax left a nasty surprise on the toilet wall. Uggh. Some people are pigs.

So he had two chocolate surprises that flight!

I hate to think too far into how it's got on the wall...the pilot wasn't doing aerobatics was he?

I'd love to know how. On second thoughts I don't want to know....

When I was giving them their chocs, the FA said that I didn't have to do that.

Me: Oh yes I did. You HAD to glove up!
FA: Oh, Honey. The things I could tell you that Ive had to clean up over the years.
