General Cruise Discussion

Guess a little update is required...
Boarding S.Dawn in Sin confirmed that we have been upgraded to a Silver Suite; this was excellent service recovery by SS as we had been very unhappy campers pre departure.
We have, so far, found the service standards to be high; the ship is well staffed and they are well trained, even to the lofty standards of a SiverSea regular…. To my surprise all the wines have been palatable and requests accommodated ( fish and chips for lunch in Atlantide saw rapid discovery of a cold bottle of Riesling..)
I prefer the Nova's spacious funkiness however Swmbo finds the Dawn more inclusive.
We have had quite a few sea days and only one port ( coughet), tomorrow Tricomalee and a long day trip to Sigiria
The sea cave tour ex coughet was very good and I will try to post some pics, however icloud is very slow to update from the phone atm
Happy to answer questions….
You would have to be happy with a Silver Suite upgrade. Hope you enjoy the rest of the cruise.

Friends of mine are going PER-SIN leaving this weekend on IIRC Silversea Nova. Apparently it's working through from MEL and there were some good deals for the PER-SIN leg.

Any particular tips from the Silversea brains' trust that I should pass on for SS first-timers ?

As newbies it should all be exciting

Agree. We just got off in Melbourne. They will love the ship. After 25 years of cruising this is our now our favourite ship.

Make sure to get a booking in Silver Note. It’s an experience not to miss.

And as soon as they get on board sign up for the free cooking classes which are available most days.

Don’t miss the Grill on a nice balmy night and cook your own prawns, steak, fish or lamb cutlets on the hot rock.

I wouldn't describe myself as part of the SS brains trust, but my suggestion would be to engage with the butler and room attendant early - they will be invaluable. Also you can snag a seat on the rear open balcony at the La Terrazza restaurant (very pleasant for breakfast, at least) by using the stairs there from the deck above right on opening time. The main doors might have a queue in front and the best seats are snapped up quick. (Assumes the Nova has a similar design to others). Ah. biggest tip of all - they can ask for any wine at any time. SS have a bizarre thing where the waiters 'offer' just one white and one red at meals. They aren't bad, but you can ask for any of the 10 or so on rotation, at any meal.

EDIT: I see they are leaving this weekend - bon voyage.

When we were on the Disney cruise over NYE 2023/24, we booked a placeholder for an upcoming cruise. We need to use it/set sail with that placeholder by 3 Jan 2026 I think.

I looked at the Disney AU/NZ itinerary for the upcoming season. Mr Katie isn't sure about the 10 night one from AKL to SYD from 19-29 Dec. I think it'd be fun experiencing Xmas day on board, and it's a sea day. We might do the NYE one, though this time it's only going to Eden. I'm hesitant to try any of the cruises going to Hobart.

Oh, and Katie Mum and I are doing an AMA Waterways special interest cruise later this year, from Amsterdam to Basel.

Any feedback on this cruise operator?

Early pleasant engagement with the Butler and the room attendant will result in them doing extra little favours you might ask. The great service should come naturally but on my Antarctic cruise, the Butler and I got on really well and he matched my taste in mini bar content (ie fresh lime slices at about 4 pm for the afternoon G&T and refresh the ice bucket) and snacks (fresh cashews to go with a G&T) and timing very attentively. Room attendant doesn’t have a very easy job so engaging with him early and working around his timing just makes things go a lot smoother
