General Discussion/Q&A on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I cannot believe this and I'm angry that this happened - yesterday! Not the NAPLAN but in Sydney yesterday On a cruise ship just berthed they had people with suspicious systems and had been tested for Covid - they let almost 3000 people off the ship and now three of those tests are positive! Ruby Princess.
We just blew that curve off the planet and there is no excuse.
I didn’t really understand why this happened when I heard. The announcement Sunday was that cruise ships were not allowed to dock. But Ruby Princess and others were allowed.

It seems because the cruise left Australia it was ‘low risk’🧐 and the passengers presumably are largely Australians... that just spent nearly two weeks in a pressure cooker. Same deal as with passengers off planes, ‘give ‘em a flyer and send them packing’, but at least they were all tested. People coming off planes aren’t even tested.

We watched a cruise ship sail out of Port Adelaide a couple of hours ago. Ban the lot! But weirdly Australian based cruises are deemed safe. They aren't. Period.

I have been compiling a risk spreadsheet for a couple of months now. It covers selected countrie of transit to my (currently defunct) work and places where colleagues live. the numbers are crude, with populations from wikipedia, but cases per 100,000 gives an idea of spread through a population. Headline numbers by country don't consider the ppolation (for example 14,000 cases in USA isn't anything like as grim as 18,000 cases in Spain). Of course each country has its own hotspots so I repeat the numbers are rough. A few in italic where I am doubtful about the numbers. Source is he Johns Hopkins University dashboard except where indicated.

Tough stuff deciding if your child should attend school or not. We're very compliant people, so Gov advice is followed to the T.

Our youngest is in year 12, QLD has moved to a new system OP > ATAR, it's been a massive introduction for the current crop. The whole thing is a mess, somewhere around 20% of year 12 students are not attending our school.

Our child is still attending school - can you imagine the discomfort for the current crop of year 12 around the country + Uni and every other person in their final year of study.

Does anyone find that when they're making a meal, you're more consciously thinking about what you're eating? For example, we're trying to make as many 'fresh food' meals as possible, rather than going for the easier 'from the freezer' food types with the thinking being that if we did have to stay inside for a while, or if food does start to run out; then we're better to leave the freezer/tinned/dry goods type stuff for if/when that period happens?

I think general levels of stress and anxiety are somewhat increasing and in reality, the world is still not that bad. It saddens and scares me to think what people felt like during the great depression, the great famine in Ireland, world wars, etc.

Have just been down to the chemist to pickup my usual prescriptions as only had half a week's supply left and quite an interesting experience. There was someone guarding the door with lock and key and it was like I had to do a secret knock to even get it open! When opened, I was asked several questions, upon answering no to them I was let in.

All around the pharmac_ were these signs......... Please maintain two metres between yourself, staff and other customers.
Chemist.jpeg

In reality, it was nearly impossible to do as no space allowed 2m other than from the door to the counter........

Pubs, bars, restaurants, gyms etc. now been asked to close in the UK.

When will Australia follow suit?

That advice re school will be changing shortly. They are just trying to make it to the next school holidays. They know people won't be going back to school and work for st least 3 months once shutdown occurs. They are now not sure thought if they can hold off another 3 weeks in all states hence the suburb by suburb lockdown thinking.

It's a hard call but currently there is more risk in them not attending. I heard someone, not Morrison say that once they cancel schools then it will be basically wiping out a year of education for them. I feel much sympathy for all parents during this period.

Indeed. The next Q - what will they do with exams / assessments particularly for year 12.

Will they follow the UK example and just make it up! If so, lets hope they're a lot better at predicting than your average power or water company when it comes to guessing usage.

All they're doing is delaying the inevitable and making the problem worse. How can they seriously think children aren't spreading the virus around? What other diseases are children miraculously not infectious for?

Total bedlam assured. If the professionals can't control them in a classroom.... Might be best to write off 2020, and just line up again for the starters pistol in the new year.

Our local libraries have closed. The gym is trimming it's group class schedule to reduce the numbers in the venue at once. Swimming lessons are gone.
