Excellent idea. If you can convince yourself that this will help keep you alive with all your toes and feet and, that the fasting 'pain' is all in the mind', it will be a cinch. Helps a lot with the weight too.

Hubby partially fasts 2 days per week, suggested by a specialist his GP sent him to after blood results. He has breakfast, exercise, a meal and stops eating about 10am until 5.30am the next day.

Ouch!
Seems like cruel and unreasonable punishment to me.

Hubby had blood results and 1st Dr said youre diabetic, youre going to have to be on insulin, cut down on your exercise because youre a health risk. I swear, I thought hubby was going to drop dead just walking to the car by the way the 1st Dr was talking. And hubby either swims, walks or runs every day.

We got a 2nd opinion and this Dr suggested dietician consults (hubby and all those stupid sports drinks and grazing on bowls of fruit all day), specialists visit (the fasting guy) to cross check and continue to exercise and come back in 3mths for more bloods. His sugar levels are now in normal range - Dr was thrilled. This Dr moved to the Blue Mountains so we happily travel 120klms round trip to go see him.

Straitman I am with you on eating as we are very good at it. Just getting checked today with a blood test.
i do feel attached to all my toes and I walk for an hour in a pool instead of trying a starvation plan.
Feeling ok and would like a great set of numbers from the blood test today. Maybe I am dreaming.......
i have to see a dermatologist as 70 years can be cruel to skin....

I don’t eat until I actually feel hungry and needing to do so. I don’t buy things I will be tempted to eat. If I feel hungry then I might have a warm drink instead and see if it was actually thirst. There comes a point when you just know you need to eat and that’s when I do. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had three meals in a day.

I am not a nice person if I am hungry - a classic hangry person. I tend to eat 4 times a day, but all very small. I think everyone is different and what works for one won’t work for another. If I fasted for a day, you would have to lock me in a room and not let anyone near me.....

Hubbys trainer moved him to almond milk once (morning smoothie)... omg, the Snickers Hangry is real.

Oh I get super Hangry. Miss TC isn’t much better.

has been over 6 and getting that lower takes months rather than days

You can lower your daily average bsl to whatever level you wish in a day.. it's a very simple equation of food-v-exercise.
....
Unfortunately not. If you have insulin resistance (as in most type 2 diabetics) the fasting level will not drop below a certain level even after a prolonged fast

The criteria for diagnosing diabetes has also changed recently
You can use fasting glucose>7.0 or random glucose >11.1 or Hba1c >6.5%. Its quite rare these days to need a glucose tolerance test
If no symptoms, you need 2 to be true or one to be repeated. There are a gew exclusions for Hba1c diagnosis if there are haematological problems going on as well

I did a blood test last week and even my Dr is surprised at the results. It sort of mellowed out some of the pain of all the paperwork we are doing for DVA.

I also see a dermatologist twice a year but am off to get a surgeon in a few weeks to cut out a couple of nasties.

Super interesting reply , thanks very much.

Indeed.. but most will drop back into the normal range under prolonged fasting y/n ?

I don't understand this new diabetes criteria.
You are saying that as long as anyone has 2 x hba1c @ <6.5 they are not/no longer diabetic ?
So they rock off and for the next 9 months eat tons of trifle and sponge cake (with commensurate bsl levels…)
3 months out before the next hba1c they eat thoughtfully… test under 6.5 again and they are still not diabetic ?

Most type 2 diabetics will not be able to get their blood sugar under 6 (unless they are on medication) however long they fast (...well until they lose significant weight in which case their insulin resistance may improve)

Normal Hba1c's don't rule out diabetes but can be used to rule it in.
The insulin-resistant trifle-eaters would probably be picked up by a fasting glucose but you are right might miss being diagnosed in those circumstances.

On a recent test my random glucose level was 5.6. I didn’t know they were testing for glucose and I’d not fasted. In fact I’d eaten a chocolate croissant about 30 minutes before the test.
So my levels were perfectly fine.
But this was the rider on the lab result.

... and I forgot to mention that the surgeon reminded me that I am several years overdue for a colonoscopy! (Bugger)
