General Medical issues thread

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Was that 2-3 weeks for the swelling? I'm 4 days in now and it's still as swollen now as it was to start off with. Rang the Dr and was told that could still take a while to go down. Making life difficult as while I can wfh, I do really need to be in the office next week as it's just too hard co-ordinating all my team. Frustration levels are quite high and getting stressed about the upcoming travel.
The real severe swelling was probably a week, but it took about 3 weeks for all the swelling to go. The more you can rest it the better, even if it is frustrating....Hope it is OK for your travels. I have just spent 4 hours at emergency because my blood pressure has gone out of control. If it's not one thing it's the other :(

Re: The totally off-topic thread

ANA level is positive but not hugely so and homogenous. So another round of blood tests done before calling it. These found the AP titre very high. ANA tests aren't repeated once positive as it can create another layer of confusion. The specialist does have a sero negative ANA patient but they had a positive lupus nephritis biopsy.
There are quite a few people with high ANA where it never progresses to anything. Miss FM's rheumatologist gets everything tested everytime and her ANA floats all over the place and all the other bits as well. Her CK is very high and they can't find a reason.

Arnica cream might work for your sprain.

Yes. Thats also true re ANA being high not being 'converted' to an illness. The same with the blood clotting antibodies. You can have the antibodies to clotting (putting it simply) but never experience either a clot or pregnancy loss (the other clinical event). You have to have a clinical event before the Drs 'call' the AP an APS - syndrome. They dont screen people unless there is something suggesting there is an issue because asking 'the question' creates a cascade of events for people who will never have an issue.

Does your daughter have any 'clinical' problems?

The blood stuff/auto immune stuff is truly weird. Testing positive to the clotting issue, in the laboratory, means that the blood takes a lot longer to clot. That is the key feature. (Plus this corrects when phospholipid is added to the blood sample). In the body, it means you are more likely to clot.

I've decided I love the research/science behind the medicine. Makes sense I guess - My work from the first day out of Uni was a social science researcher. But I dont love the patients so much. Many of them anyway! So I would have been a lousy Doctor.

Arnica cream here too.

Tamagotchi - my kids had those. Quite exhausting it was.

Oi - Mods - can we have an all things Medical thread?

That doesn't sound good FM. Hope it's settled down again. MrL_t_L used to visit there quite regularly and they would keep him in for 8 hrs as they were looking for heart attack. In many cases it was a potassium imbalance.

Thinking of your wedding plans today as a friend's son is being married this morning beside the lake at the CSCYC. I am tempted to don the long johns. I understand there is a marquee....
Think your changed venue was a good move.

Just saw love_the_life post about this. Hope the bp settles. ASAP!

Re: The totally off-topic thread

On the topic of injuries...late last year I partially dislocated my knee cap. Took a good three or so months before it felt normal again. Last week tripped avoiding the pup and slammed my knee into a door. Fortunately a couple of days with no major activity (no gym) seems to have mostly put it right again. But I do love in fear that it will 'pop' again.

I have always had a bit of a problem with blood pressure spiralling from time to time, but usually it goes back down again and I manage to avoid medication. I was feeling dizzy for a few days and took my blood pressure, but when it was 190/100 for two days running, I made an appointment with my GP for Monday, I then made the mistake of telling Mr FM, who immediately phoned DR FM, who went hysterical and insisted he take me to emergency..... They were concerned enough to give me medication to tide me over to Monday. I have the dreaded machine in front of me and about to take it again, but am procrastinating.

Absolutely - just to have options if the weather is foul (as it is today). Come to think of it I think I will blame my blood pressure problems on all the stress Breenhold caused me. :) Hope it was all OK!

I would not take it at all (your BP). Enjoy your weekend and check up with your GP on Monday.

Does your daughter have any 'clinical' problems?
One of her nerves in her leg died, which caused most of the muscles in the lower leg/calf area to die, so she has one leg that looks like a 12 year olds and a limp. Her Rheumatologist sent her to a neurologist and he did lots of tests, including a biopsy of the muscle, but everything was inconclusive, I was pretty unhappy with him and if anything else happens, I will be finding someone in Sydney. Her Rheumatologist feels it has to be connected to her high ANA and Rheumatoid Factor, but no one can actually work out what is going on. At the moment she is in a "holding pattern" with annual blood tests. She gets tired very easily and suffered from post viral fatigue for a couple of years, but managed to fight back from that (more or less). She is a very determined young lady and doesn't let any of it get to her, or stop her doing what she wants (like you!). Her Rheumatologist was convinced she was going to develop Scleraderma, but nothing has happened as yet. Every year without a new problem is a blessing.

Sounds good to me - I think taking my blood pressure immediately puts it up!

The hospital did say to take it regularly and to come back if the medication hadn't lowered it, but I feel really good today, so I am sure everything is fine :)

The totally off-topic thread

Holding patterns and auto immune stuff go hand in hand. My rheumatologist was saying she cares for a few people with ANA through the roof but no other issues. Just monitoring.

I take my cue from my niece. 29, PhD, two kids under five and travels around the world for her work all with SLE. I dips me lid to her mother who looks after the kids while she is away, a lot.

Plus, just as I get to the age in my life when I can travel then that is what I will do.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

And given the number of posts in this topic, I am certain the mods would CAREFULLY consider the consequences...
Especially on their blood pressure! I wonder if they measure it before and after they move, delete the OP?

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Just bought travel insurance policies for 3 overseas trips with pre existing supplements. Would normally purchase an annual policy but need cruise cover. Oh well, better be safe.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Arnica cream might work for your sprain.

I'd use that and anti inflammatory drugs instead of icing it. Ice is good for pain in the first 1-2 days but there is now support for the position that ice actually hinders the healing as it inhibits blood flow to the injury. Not all inflammation is bad - it's part of the healing process.

And, Arnica creams tend to be homeopathic, so you may as well just use sorboline and gentle massage.

Have some arriving in the next 5 minutes or so, so let's see if this homeopathic rubbish is good for anything

Another fun day - my guys are doing a fairly high impact migration for a client at the moment and there's some fairly large issues. To rollback or fix forward. Decisions to be made.... falls on my head, of course

How did it go? I used Fisio Cream on mine yesterday and got some relief.

And the migration? Which way did you go??

Didn't really seem to make much of a difference. I guess the placebo effect ;) was no good for me!

Fix forward - only sensible option really. Now I just need to hope today's work goes ok....
