General Medical issues thread

Actually there is a very good reason caffeine is not added to tablets in Australia.Australia suffered from an epidemic of kidney failure due to Vincent's and Bex APC powders.
THe P was phenacetin which did the damage and the C was caffeine which addicted many.
There was an expression-A cup of tea ,a bex and a good lie down.Even Kevin Rudd advised reporters questioning him about a leadership challenge to do just that in September 2011.
Panadol ”enhanced”with caffeine is promoted at Woolworths.

Phenacetin isn't panadol (paracetamol).
Yes. I think we all know that. Phenacetin is acetophenetidin, N-(4-ethoxyphenyl)acetamide while panadol is acetaminophen (N-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)acetamide). Phenacitin was banned in most countries in the late 60‘s, including Australia as I believe.

Edit: My mother used to take Bex and it caused her severe issues,

Latest shortage is Gaviscon that granny takes regularly. There is almost zero liquid and the tablet form is running short.
Can she get the script version of another antacid (not liquid) which is pantoprazole? They are excellent.

Thanks for the idea of a Gaviscon ingredient being a Covid-19 cure. With so many stupids in this world Gaviscon might be hard to find for a while.
SIL grabbed the last stock for granny.....three bottles at a Perth Coles store.....so they are now out of stock too.

Woolies and Chemist Warehouse in Victoria Park are showing stock if that’s any help

“A cup of tea, a Bex and a good lie down”. The housewives of the 60’s swore by it. 😀

Edit: Similar mentioned, upthread

Don't start a run on it Cove. People will not be able to get any unless they knock on your grannie's door with a cup. ;)

Hey @prozac too late. I went the large bottles at Chemist Warehouse in Victoria Park. Telling a 94 year old that there is none was a conversation I needed to avoid.....

I'll post you some pantoprazole, one of the many drugs I was sent home from hospital with that I simply don't need or use.

If we have lots of champagne and a very late dessert I might take a Somac tablet to avoid reflux. I use two or three a year.
