General Medical issues thread

As a boarder over 60 years ago, I was forced to wear flannel pyjamas which were itchy and plain uncomfortable. I swore then I'd never ever wear PJs again and have slept nude since then (sorry if TMI). I don't own any PJs so had to scramble to find something acceptable for hospital.

Thank heavens for F!

Best wishes for today but that story is priceless.

Finally got calls today to inform us what time the Teen's surgery is tomorrow. It's been quite a source of anxiety for them, and luckily I'd managed to book an appt with their psych yesterday. I think they spent the whole time working through their fears about the surgery.

First call from pre-admin nurse:
Arrive at 7am, fast food from 2am, drinks from 5am.
3rd on the theatre list, doc scheduled to start at 7:30am.
Oh, and a comment about our landline not working (even though I provided it, who on earth calls them first these days??!!)

Second call, from doctor's nurse, 30 mins later:
Fast from midnight.
Oh! I say, that's different to what the hospital said. Nurse tells me the first op has been cancelled, they've changed the theatre list, the Teen is first, and please be at the hospital at 5:45am.

Third call, from someone else at the hospital checking on details:
Confirm no out-of-pocket for hospital, but there may be for surgeon and anaesthetist (yup, already paid the nurse the doc's out-of-pocket fee)
Asks "is this your landline?" Me: no, and it hasn't been for over 11 years when we moved houses and couldn't take the number with us. I certainly didn't put that in the admission forms online, so my best bet is they synchronised the Teen's information from being born at their Kids hospital. Sigh.
Also clarifies my email. I'd used a nice trick with GMail - <myname>+<teenname>@gmail.com - this creates a unique email address for websites, but the emails actually just go to me without creating more email inboxes to follow. Even though I'd entered the email and received a response to it, they had to check if the + was + or t. My mind boggles ... I guess someone is manually re-entering data??!!

Anyway, will give the Teen a treat or two tonight to help them get distracted of their big thoughts. I've bought a couple of lego kits and a Squishmallow. Planning on a couple more little squishmallows. Might start with the lego kit with the light saber, as the doc is using a "mini light saber" to debride the back of the patella.

You won't need PJs in hospital, will you?

It was on their list, but no I didn't get to wear them even though it was an overnight stay.
I was worried I'd freeze as I was permanently chilled during my stem cell transplant. The surgical ward was MUCH warmer.

Hope it all goes smoothly for teen tomorrow as it will be a big deal for her and I can imagine she will be stressed. At least being first cab means less time at the hospital to be just sitting around waiting.

I've done hospital before with boxers and a tshirt with no issue. I just put on tracksuit pants or shorts if I was walking around.

There is no benefit from being FCOTR.
Reduced waiting. I was advised to be at hospital at 1030am, finally called in at 4:15pm, woke up at 7:00pm. The last thing I remembered saying with a mask over my face "oh this smells like isoflu......."

I was last - starting at 11pm. I'd much rather have been early, even surgeons must get tired (and no, he didn't sleep in that morning).

The early ops at my place are told they could go home same day

But have to wake up before sparrows.

One real story at our hospital was a patient was told to come in at 5:30am. What they didn’t realise was that she was an 85 year old who had stairs from house to road and she lived 2hrs away. Pt got ready at 2:30 am, slowly made her way down to road to wait for Uber. Kept getting cancelled for some reason. Eventually got to hospital at 06:45. Rush rush rush to get her into OR. Others would have done a “hello” 🙋🏻‍♂️. But a lot of people don’t want to rock the boat.

It’s sort of like the EK 0600 departure out of SYD

She apparently was made #2 or #3 the next time - arrival into hospital at midday.

Ladies who birth prior to 1159pm are deemed to have stayed 1 postpartum day. Ladies who birth at 1201am are deemed to have only started their first postpartum day. = Often later surgeries can stay overnight.

I reckon the surgeon and OR team can warm up on someone else before they start on me…

I was never going to be going home on the same day due to my complex medical history with multiple myeloma (in remission), previous history of DVTs and PEs and a medicine bag of blood thinners including Eliquis, Clexane and Heparin

Sometimes writing all the meds into the medicine chart takes longer than the operation itself
All that's done online now preoperatively, they just read it back to you for confirmation. Once they took me through, it was relatively speedy and straightforward. My anaesthetist Jane was absolutely fantastic - she took all the time we both needed to discuss perioperative pain management and the pros and cons of the different drugs and was generally very warm and empathetic.

Surgeon walked in said, " starting in a few minutes" and walked out. Was more talkative when I was in recovery but still very much a "went well, see you in three weeks, now who's next" attitude.

Very much better consultation the following morning in the ward, me awake and him not in a hurry.

No side effects from endone here, but my body cooks it so fast I'm back in pain well before the next dose is due. Same goes for anaesthetics; don't think the surgeons appreciated my 4yo self waking up in the OR, standing on the table and screaming for my mum
