General Medical issues thread

My dentist will not do a tooth extraction without an injection
I always have local anaesthetic injection for dental. Much better than gas. With gas you should not drive after. With local injection you can drive after.
The cost of injection Vs gas is minimal.

Unable to comment on dental extraction cost.

what's the issue with injection?

The local anaesthetic gives me severe panic attacks.

Many years ago I had a dental procedure under general anaesthetic and also took out 2 wisdom teeth. I told the dental surgeon no local anaesthetic.

When I came to after the procedure I was in the middle of severe panic attack. Valium was not helping. Saw the dental surgeon before going home. I asked him about local anaesthetic and he said he gave me double dose. Why when I asked you not to give me any? He said I was extremely agitated after local anaesthetic even under general anaesthetic.

I was still struggling at 9:00pm that night more than 12 hours after being given general anaesthetic. I don't want to go through that again.

To extract the 2 teeth with local anaesthetic is around $500 after Medibank rebate. I'm prepared to pay extra but not $2000+.

Me thinks it's the general anaesthetic you were reacting to
No, it's definitely the adrenalin in the local anaesthetic.

I've had countless gastroscopy/colonoscopy and not one panic attack.

I was totally naive a few years back when I went to see an opthalmologist. Nurse said we need to put some drops in your eyes for the exam. I think it's the local anaesthetic. Never again.

Apologies @tgh I didn't ask for all these issues. My preference would be to go through life without a single ailment but for some reason I've ended up with more than my fair share.

Had a nose reconstruction in 1992. The aneasthetic I was given knocked me out for 24hrs. After the op I was awake, but only just and this well into the 2nd day, so I have been cautious about aneasthetic ever since. In 2015 I was having a pacemaker implant at the same hopsital. Still cautious I asked the nurse doing the prep if she could go light on the drugs because I react badly. 5 mnutes into the op the cardiologist says to me "You can feel this can't you?" Yep. Thankfully he ordered a top-up.
I think they are using different drugs these days because I haven't had the same reaction again.

I love the feeling of going to sleep under general anaesthetic, it’s the easiest I ever get off to sleep 😴. Last night it took me 2 hours!

I know that feeling well
Indeed. When I was lined up pre theatre for neurosurgery having had the pre med, the surgeon asked me why I was smiling. I replied it was the first time in months I wasn't in pain. I wasn't the least bit worried about the surgery because I wasn't able to use my right leg anyway. (I completely ruptured a disc and it lodged in my spinal canal. Lost all sensation in my right leg. And just in my thirties)

I think I shall be giving my AMEX Plat travel insurance a call, think they do a teleconsult first before deciding further action. Not happy Jan! Felt absolutely fine when I got back to the hotel from dinner, but then...... up all night vomiting, chills, fever, etc. Damnit, was looking forward to going exploring today as had a day off.

...... or not!

Don't you hate it when you get sick on your RDO.
I hope the worst has passed.

Came on very suddenly, felt OK when I got back last night and then as I walked through the door thought... hm, not feeling great, might see if I can throw up.. which turned into running to the bathroom as it was already on the way up. Feel like I've gone 10 rounds, a bit annoying as I have lots I need to get done tomorrow. There is certainly lots of passing............ ;)

Experiences with steroi_s anyone? Need to undergo a course of Prednisolone.
Fix my gout very well in just one or two days. Take for as short a period as possible.

I think it’s the effect on kidney function that’s the problem with long-term use isn’t it @Quickstatus ?

Injected steroi_s are becoming my friend.
